SAINT JOHN -  The Saint John Sea Dogs hung around but couldn't defeat the top-ranked Halifax Mooseheads on Friday night at TD Station.

Jordan Dumais scored twice and added an assist to lift the Mooseheads — ranked No. 1 in the Canadian Hockey League — to a 4-2 win. Brody Fournier and Mathieu Cataford also scored while Mathis Rousseau made 23 saves in the win.

Halifax outshot Saint John 14-4 in the first period and led 2-0. The rest of the match was played much more evenly but the Sea Dogs couldn't cut the deficit further than two goals. Shots ended 29-25 in favour of Halifax, an indication of how the final two periods were played.

While it was a loss, the Sea Dogs competed well and kept it close — which is pretty much all you can ask for in a lopsided matchup like this.

Nate Tivey and Pavel Simek scored for Saint John. Peter Reynolds added two assists. Patrick Leaver made 25 stops in the loss.
