IS DESPRES ON THE BLOCK?

Could Saint John Sea Dogs defenseman Simon Despres be on the move to a provincial rival?

Chronicle Herald reporter Willy Palov posted this on Twitter this afternoon.

“GM said he heard a rumour of Despres being dealt to Titan ‘It seems unlikely,’ he said. ‘But Bathurst is making a lot of deals so who knows.’”

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s trading period opens Friday morning at 9:00 am ADT and ends on Saturday at 11:00 am.

A trade with the Acadie Bathurst Titan involving Despres does seem unlikely however, with the northern New Brunswick team reportedly sending their first round draft pick to Lewiston for goaltender Olivier Roy.

There are still roadblocks in the deal, apparently. Roy is almost guaranteed to be traded from Cape Breton to Lewiston tomorrow. But according to Metro Halifax’s Matthew Wuest on Twitter, the deal to send the Edmonton Oilers draft choice to Bathurst is not a done deal.

“G Olivier Roy to Bathurst is no sure thing, according to two different GMs,” reports Wuest. “Apparently the asking price is too high. We'll see tomorrow.”

Despres, a 2009 Pittsburgh Penguins first round draft pick, would likely get a big return – something that Bathurst may struggle to pull together.

The QMJHL’s first overall selection in the 2007 midget draft scored nine goals and added 38 assists in 63 games played last season with the Dogs. In his three year junior career, the Laval, Que. native has 12 goals and 81 assists.

Once again, these are all rumours. All final deals will be completed within the next 48 hours.

Metro Halifax has a beautiful rundown of all the rumoured deals today.
