SI: TURK CONSIDERED A 'FRONT-RUNNER'

Sports Illustrated’s NHL reporter Allan Muir had a complete run down of all of the possible positions for the Tamp Bay Lightning’s vacant coaching position today at SI.com.

As many publications have stated over the past week, Saint John Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant is a strong candidate for the position. Most of those publications stat that Gallant’s strong season with his young team and his friendship with Tampa General Manager Steve Yzerman put him in the running for the job.

Muir calls “Turk” a “front-runner” for the post. Unfortunately, he does not know what league or city Gallant coaches in.

Gerard Gallant: Yzerman's linemate during Detroit's Dead Things era was damaged goods after a brief stint in Columbus, but resuscitated his image with a sensational job behind the bench for the WMJHL's Saint John's Sea Dogs that earned him a nod as the CHL's top coach. His work with those juniors allayed concerns that he couldn't be trusted with a youth movement like the one he failed to steer in Columbus. More than one NHL source suggests Yzerman will lean on a familiar quantity he can trust, and Gallant fits that requirement to a T. Consider him the front-runner.

Halifax Mooseheads play-by-play John Moore reported on Twitter that Gallant has not spoken with Yzerman about the job despite both of them being in Florida last week.
