TRADE WINDOW OPENS THIS MORNING

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s trading period will open this morning in Drummondville Que., the site of the circuit’s annual meetings and entry draft.

The exchanging period opens at 9:00 am ADT and closes tomorrow at 11:00 am.

Several blockbuster deals are expected to go down despite reports that general managers have stated that the trading front has been rather quiet.

Station Nation’s Bert Richardson has been discussing all of the rumours over the past few days. To read his posts, click HERE and HERE.

Metro Halifax also has an excellent rundown of all of the speculated transactions.

One team that has not been discussed in trade rumours to much extent has been the Saint John Sea Dogs.

All we know about the Sea Dogs is that they will likely be looking for a goaltender to replace the now graduated Marco Cousineau.

One possible deal that came up yesterday saw Simon Despres heading to Bathurst. Director of Hockey Operations Mike Kelly shot down those reports in the Telegraph-Journal today.

"We're not actively trying to trade him at all,'' Sea Dogs associate coach and hockey operations director Mike Kelly said. "I can't stop teams from calling me. If I were them, I would be calling me, too. We really like what Simon brings.

"Right now, we have one of two ways we can go. We're really interested in hosting the Memorial Cup (in 2012) and we want to have a very good team, but the benefit of having a guy like that who could help you win a championship and get to the Memorial Cup, that has huge benefits, too.

"We could get younger (by trading Despres), but we like the idea of having good teams. Our young players played well and showed us that they're capable of a lot and I think that they're hungry. We're not actively trying to do anything.''

Although Couturier met with Kelly briefly Thursday, a deal involving Despres didn't appear to be in the works.

"He hasn't even made an offer,'' Kelly said. "I have no offers for Simon Despres. We're not trying to trade him.''
