SAINT JOHN SCRATCHES
Kevin Gagne missed his second straight game with what News 88.9 reported as an “upper body injury.” Today’s Telegraph-Journal had more:
Sea Dogs defenceman Kevin Gagne missed both weekend games with a concussion. The 18-year-old Edmundston native hopes to return to the lineup for Saturday's road game against Acadie-Bathurst.Aidan Kelly sat out as the extra forward.

A surprisingly dominate performance by the Saint John Sea Dogs sent a message to the Quebec Remparts. Going into yesterday’s match, the two teams were tied for the highest winning percentage in the league.
Saint John scored four goals in the first period and added two more in the second to cruise by Quebec 6-0 yesterday in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League play at Harbour Station.
"We competed and everything went well for us early,” said Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant to the Telegraph-Journal. “We knew it was going to be a challenge, but we did everything we wanted to do.''
Tomas Jurco made it 1-0 Saint John 10:36 on the power play when he fired a low shot through traffic that found the back-of-the-net. The Sea Dogs doubled their lead at 13:07. Steven Anthony fed Stanislav Galiev with a nice pass, allowing the Russian to record his 10th of the season.
Saint John made it 3-0 at 15:02 when Pierre Durepos let a shot go from just above the hash marks and beat Remparts goaltender Louis Domingue high glove side. The Sea Dogs wouldn’t stop there as they scored their fourth goal at 16:05. The Remparts defense looked a but confused on the play, allowing Jurco and Jonathan Huberdeau to have a long two-on-none opportunity. Huberdeau embarrassed Domingue with an unreal deke to make it 4-0 after one.
Captain Mike Thomas got in on the action at 6:35 of the second period when he beat Jimmy Appleby – who replaced Domingue in the Remparts goal after the fourth marker – in close to give Saint John a 5-0 lead and officially make it blowout city.
The third line kept rolling when Stephen MacAulay scored at 15:31, a goal that would end up being the final marker of the hockey game.
In the third, neither team looked to ambitious about scoring goals. The game would end with the Sea Dogs being victorious by score of 6-0.
Sure, it was the Remparts third game in as many days, but nobody expected the two teams to battle in such a lopsided affair. Quebec destroyed the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Friday night, defeating the northern New Brunswick team 5-2 while outshooting them 49-15. On Saturday, the Remparts beat the PEI Rocket 4-3 in overtime.
"This is the first time we saw a team that moved the puck so fast,'' Renparts head coach Patrick Roy said when comparing Sunday's outcome to his team's previous two tilts to the T-J. "Their intensity was something we had a hard time adjusting to. Normally, we are the ones who impose the tempo of the game. But today they did and we just couldn't follow that pace.''
Quebec finishes their tough Maritime road trip with a respectable 2-1-0-0 record.
THE BOURRET SHOW
Gabriel Bourret put on a clinic this weekend. After recording two assists and earning first star honours on Saturday night, Bourret beat that accomplishment by dishing out four assists en route to another first star naming.
His hot weekend was good enough for the QMJHL to name him first star of the week.
The second-year Sea Dog has seen an increase in his playing time as well as his offensive numbers. But along with that, Bourret has looked much more comfortable on the ice. His production this weekend helped fill the whole that was left with Kevin Gagne out of the lineup.
BACK IN FIRST
With the win and a Drummondville Voltigeurs loss, the Sea Dogs find themselves in a familiar place – first overall in the QMJHL. Saint John now has a record of 18-3-0-2 which is good for 38 points. Their point total is one ahead of Drummondville, two ahead of Quebec, and three ahead of the Montreal Juniors.
Much like last season as well, the Sea Dogs lead the league in goals scored with 106 and are the only team with over 100 goals. Their 59 goals against also puts them in a three way tie with Quebec and the Shawinigan Cataractes for the least goals allowed this season.
Furthermore, Saint John’s 18 wins and 38 points are the most in the Canadian Hockey League.
TURK BELIEVES IN QUEBEC CITY
Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant told the Journal de Quebec that he believes Quebec City could once again host a National Hockey League team someday. Gallant told that the paper a strong Canadian dollar and several US teams struggling to attract fans could bode well for the city.

After Mike Thomas’ goal in the second period, Matthew Brown smashed his stick over the Quebec nets crossbar.

The Sea Dogs third line continues to impress. The trio of Mike Thomas, Danick Gauthier, and Stephen MacAulay has showed a nice offensive side to their defenseive duties. The three combined for two goals and two assists in the game.
Along with the third line dominating, the Sea Dogs’ penalty killing unit was solid, keeping the league’s best power play scoreless on five opportunities.
The Sea Dogs’ second line of Jonathan Huberdeau, Zach Phillips, and Tomas Jurco registered two assists and two goals as well. The line, which gives NHL scouts the shivers, as been dubbed “the bachelor line” by Sea Dogs play-by-play man Tim Roszell. Excellent.
Patrick Roy told Journal de Quebec that Saint John has some of the best lines in the league.
Some sad news to pass along today as KFC will no longer be offering the Double Down in Canada. The era was nice to the Sea Dogs though, as the team went 8-1-0-1 during the stretch.
QUICK HITS
Stanislav Galiev joined Jonathan Huberdeau, Zach Phillips, and Tomas Jurco in the double-digit goal club… there are no reports of any Roy family member going on a toilet smashing rampage at Harbour Station this year… this was Louis Domingue’s first start in over a year at Harbour Station. The former Moncton Wildcat last started an October 17, 2009 game against the Sea Dogs in the SJ, a 3-2 overtime win for Saint John… the Sea Dogs are now 2-0 all-time on Multicultural Day at Harbour Station… Sea Dogs goaltender Jacob DeSerres played in his first game since suffering a groin injury last Friday against Cape Breton. The surprising Lewiston Maineiacs have now won eight-in-a-row while the dreadful Baie-Comeau Drakkar have now lost 23 straight games. The QMJHL record for consecutive loses is 27, set by the Shawinigan Dynamos in 1975-76. The Canadian Hockey League record is owned by the Victoria Cougars, who lost 32 straight matches in 1989-90.
