With a 4-1 loss to Saint John this afternoon in Sydney, the Eagles are locked in 16th slot as they can no longer pass the Halifax Mooseheads in points. The Eagles sit five points behind the Mooseheads with two games remaining on their schedule.
One of those two games remaining contests will be played this Friday at Harbour Station. The match will be the third meeting between these two teams this month. There is a good chance that the first four games of the playoff series will be squeezed into March, meaning the teams will have played each over seven times over the course of one month.
Cape Breton just clinched a playoff spot last night thanks to a Baie-Comeau Drakkar loss in Drummondville. The Eagles have a record of 17-44-1-4 this season and sit sixth in the Maritimes Division. The Sea Dogs currently sit atop the division, the league, and the Canadian Hockey League rankings with a record of 56-6-1-2.
The Eagles will have to play their best hockey of the season if they hope to have any chance at all at beating Saint John. Cape Breton does have one win against the Sea Dogs but have lost the other six games so far in the season series.
These two teams met in the first round of the 2008 playoffs and saw the Eagles sweep away the Sea Dogs in four games.
Game One of the first round will be Friday, March 25 at Harbour Station and Game Two will be played on Saturday, March 26 also in Saint John. The rest of the schedule has yet to be determined.
