Recap: Sea Dogs lose 5-2

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs were no match for the first-place Moncton Wildcats on Friday at TD Station.

The Wildcats won an eighth straight game and nearly registered a third consecutive shutout, defeating the Sea Dogs 5-2. Moncton was in control all night long, leading 5-0 late in the third period. Alexander Donovan and Bo Damphousse scored with less than 90 seconds remaining.

St. Andrews native Gabe Smith scored twice for Moncton while singles came from Evan Depatie, Teddy Mutryn and Kuzma Voronin. Captain Caleb Desnoyers recorded three assists.

Backup netminder Jacoby Weiner made 31 saves and nearly recorded a second straight shutout. He showed some frustration when Donovan scored at 18:56 of the third.

Rafaël Courchesne made 31 stops in the loss.

The Sea Dogs, coming off a 2-0 loss to the Baie-Comeau Drakkar on Sunday in Fredericton, were nearly shutout for a second straight game. The team's power play, which was so good throughout January, is 0/7 over the past two games.

Saint John fell to 1-6-0-0 against the Wildcats this season. They have one regular season meeting remaining.

SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without forward Olivers Murnieks (injury or sickness) along with defensemen Vincent Croteau (healthy) and Oskar Drabczynski (healthy).

NOTES: Saint John went with 12 forwards and six defensemen with d-man Vincent Croteau the final scratch... forward Jabez Seymour returned from a one-game suspension. His return didn't last long as Seymour was given a five-minute major and game misconduct for kneeing in the second period... forward Olivers Murnieks missed a second straight game with an injury or sickness... former Sea Dogs defenseman Max Vilen, who was playing his first game against his former club, was in Moncton's starting lineup. He was originally given an assist on Evan Depatie's first period goal but it was removed... the Wildcats recorded the first six shots of the game. Saint John's first shot came at 6:54 of the first period... Caleb Desnoyers now has 14 points in five games against Saint John this season... Bo Damphousse had a goal and an assist. His goal was his first as a Sea Dog... Olivier Duhamel and Angelo Fullerton each had four shots... former Wildcat Carl-Otto Magnusson was the only Sea Dog without a shot on goal... a Wildcats fan bus made the trip... attendance was 3,264.
