POSTSCRIPT: Sea Dogs 6, Mooseheads 1

A collection of recaps from last night’s 6-1 Saint John Sea Dogs win over the Halifax Mooseheads…

Our recap. With Wednesday’s 6-1 victory over the Halifax Mooseheads, the Sea Dogs became the first team in the Quebec Major Hockey Junior League history to win three straight regular season titles.

Metro Halifax’s recap. The Saint John Sea Dogs don’t need favours from anybody, but got plenty from the Halifax Mooseheads on Wednesday and took full advantage.

The Chronicle Herald’s recap. "They’re tough to beat but, for the most part, I feel like we beat ourselves," said Mooseheads captain Cameron Critchlow. "I’m a little embarrassed with the effort we put out. It wasn’t our best. We need to learn to come in and want to beat those teams badly. We didn’t have it tonight. We didn’t have the desire we needed to win that game and it showed."

SaintJohnSeaDogs.com’s recap. Ryan Tesink scored twice, with Jonathan Huberdeau and Danick Gauthier adding a goal and an assist each. Charlie Coyle chipped in a goal and an assist, Grant West added a single and Mathieu Corbeil made 17 saves for the win.

MISSING IN ACTION: Tomas Jurco missed his third straight game due to educational commitments. Forward Devon Oliver-Dares remains out with a broken collarbone. Defenseman Ian Saab served the first game of an eight-game suspension.

WINNING: You’ve probably heard by now, but the Sea Dogs became the first team in QMJHL history to win three consecutive regular season titles last night. By winning in regulation, Saint John can no longer be beat by the Shawinigan Cataractes in the standings. The Cats can catch the Dogs in points but cannot win the tiebreaker.

The Sea Dogs’ history making win was featured on the front page of today’s Telegraph-Journal (pictured).

Saint John can reach the 100-point and 50-win mark for a third straight season this weekend in Cape Breton. They currently have a record of 48-15-0-3 for 99 points.

SOLDOUT: 10,595 fans were on hand to see the Sea Dogs dominate the Mooseheads at the Metro Centre. According to the Mooseheads Facebook page, it was their first sellout since March 3, 2007.

GAUTHIER: Danick Gauthier is one-goal away from tying Mike Hoffman’s single season team goal scoring record. Gautier scored his 45^th of the year last night and has two games left to try and break Hoffman’s mark of 46. You have to think he has a good chance to break the record given that Saint John is playing the second-worst team in the league on back-to-back nights.

TESINK: Ryan Tesink had a strong game for Saint John, scoring twice in the second period. His first goal came on a shorthanded breakaway that gave the Sea Dogs a 2-0 lead at the time.

Tesink now has 12 goals and 26 assists in 34 games this year.

HIGH AND LOW: Looking at the QMJHL game sheet, some players had a good night on the ice while others had one to forget.

On the Saint John side, Danick Gauthier was a +5, Pierre Durepos a +4, Charlie Coyle a +3, Jonathan Huberdeau a +3, and Nathan Beaulieu was a +3 as well.

For Halifax, defenseman Konrad Abeltshauser was an awful -5. Nathan MacKinnon and Martin Frk were both a -4.

MacKINNON: Speaking of MacKinnon, he had a fairly uneventful night by Nathan MacKinnon standards. He finished the game with a -4 rating and three shots. Halifax was only able to fire 18 shots on Mathieu Corbeil.

VS HALIFAX: The Sea Dogs will finish the regular season with a 7-1-0-0 record against the Mooseheads. Halifax finishes with a record of 1-7-0-0 against Saint John. The Mooseheads’ lone win came on December 3 at the Metro Centre.

COYLE: With his goal and assist on Wednesday, Charlie Coyle has now recorded at least at point in nine straight road games. He has also recorded an assist in five straight road contests.

Coyle now has 13 goals and 20 assists in 21 games with Saint John.

GALIEV: Since returning to the lineup in February, Stanislav Galiev has 10 points – but just two of those points are assists. He recorded his second assist since returning last night, setting up Danick Gauthier’s first period goal.

NOTES: Neither team connected on the power play… Charlie Coyle and Jonathan Huberdeau each had a Sea Dogs high six shots on goal… after recording his third career fight on Sunday in Shawinigan, Zack Phillips led the Sea Dogs in hits on Wednesday with four… Nathan MacKinnon had a Mooseheads high three shots… Trey Lewis had six hits… Grant West had two fights… Maxime Villemaire was injured in the second period and did not return... the Mooseheads handed out their team awards after the game. Zach Fucale basically won everything. 

NEXT GAME: The Sea Dogs head to Cape Breton to take on the Screaming Eagles on Friday night at 7pm.
