The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League hasn’t been too kind to Mike Thomas this season.
After missing part of the Saint John Sea Dogs’ first round playoff series because of a suspension, Thomas will be on the sidelines yet again as the QMJHL has suspended him for tomorrow’s tilt.
“The decision was rendered after reviewing the videotape of the incident, gathering the testimonies of the players and members of both organizations, reading the official’s report and consulting the independent committee in the matter of disciplinary sanctions,” stated a QMJHL press release.
The infraction came in Saint John’s 6-3 loss on Tuesday. The Tigres’ Keven Dupont, who took four minor penalties on Saturday in game two, was hammered face first into the boards by Thomas at 7:28 of the first period. Thomas was given a two minute charging minor for the hit.
Dupont sat on the ice for several minutes with the Tigres’ trainer. Although he left the game under his own power with a towel up against his face, it was later revealed that Dupont broke his nose and suffered a concussion on the play.
Wednesday morning, La Nouvelle/L’Union reported that the hit was under review by the league. QMJHL commissioner Gilles Courteau was at Colisee Desjardins on Tuesday.
In 10 playoff games, the Sea Dogs captain has three goals and an assist. The captains “C” will likely be worn by Mike Hoffman once again.
