EX-DOG STODDARD PUSHED OUT OF MOOSE ROSTER

Former Saint John Sea Dog Matthew Stoddard has been released by the Halifax Mooseheads as they make room for younger talent.

“From our standpoint, he’s not going to be one of our three 20-year-olds,” Mooseheads head coach and general manager Cam Russell said to Metro Halifax.

“This gives him time to figure out what he’s going to do next year instead of waiting for training camp.”

Another former Dog, Pascal Amyot, is still a candidate to fill one the three overage slots.

Stoddard played in 128 career games with Saint John between the 2006-07 and 2008-09 campaigns. During that time, the Porter’s Lake, Nova Scotia native amassed seven goals, 15 assists, and 102 penalty minutes.

The former Bridgewater Lumberjack chose not to report to the Sea Dogs last spring knowing he was in tough to make the squad. Stoddard was picked up by the Mooseheads but was used sparingly all season and played in just 50 games for the last place team. He finished the year with a goal and five assists.

Russell told Metro Halifax today that he plans on building the revamped Moose after the Sea Dogs, a model that will keep the team competitive for years to come.

“We’re trying to acquire draft picks and build a team that’s going to compete every year like Saint John,” Russell said.

“You’re going to see them be good next year and be good again the year after that.”

Halifax will be going all out at the entry draft in June. The team that has finished in the league’s basement for the last two seasons has five picks in the top 37 selections.
