FANS ASKED TO CHILL OUT

By Bert Richardson

Things got a little rowdy on the Lewiston Maineiacs’ official Facebook page over the weekend, forcing the team to post this message:

You may have noticed: due to a recent series of facebook exchanges between a small number of Maineiacs and Sea Dogs fans (in which fans of both teams used profanity and directed cyber-verbal attacks against players, facebook administrators, and individual fans), settings for posts have been temporarily changed to better maintain an atmosphere of respect and courtesy. We learned, because of a few individuals, that facebook is less ideal than the proboard for opposing fans to talk about hockey. This page is dedicated to support for and love of Maineiacs hockey. If you find a comment that is otherwise, please "report as abuse" by clicking on the upper right of the comment box, rather than responding in kind. Let's hear it for our MAINEiacs! Games 3&4, Tues/Wed this week!
What a drama.

The page is really the only place on the interweb where frequent discussion about the team takes place. A lot of teams have had similar problems with their page this season, which brings up the question – what is the etiquette for visiting fans?

I have no problem with fans of different teams “liking” the page, but ripping the Maineiacs apart on their own page should be frowned upon. Don’t be trolling, haters.

The Maineiacs seem to have deleted a lot of comments, many of them asking for those haters to leave the page.

Very well said. There was no need for the trash.
