University Cup begins today in Fredericton

Former Saint John Sea Dogs defenceman Matt Murphy has been named to the U Sports all-rookie team.

Murphy, who is in his first year with the UNB Varsity Reds, was named to the team at the U Sports men's hockey awards gala last night in Fredericton.
Former Rimouski Oceanic forward Anthony DeLuca also made the team. The full list can be found here.

Murphy recorded three goals and 10 assists in 30 games with the Varsity Reds this season. He's also featured prominently in a new UNB commercial.

Murphy is one of six former Sea Dogs who will compete for the University Cup this week in Fredericton. Along with Murphy, the Varsity Reds feature Mike Thomas, Stephen Anderson and Oliver Cooper. UNB, seeded fifth after losing the Atlantic University Sport championship to the StFX X-Men, play their first game tonight at 8 p.m. against the Queen's Gaels.

The other ex-Dogs playing in the tournament are StFX forwards Mark Tremaine and Marcus Cuomo. The X-Men begin play tomorrow night against the McGill Redmen.
