Game Day 1: vs Mooseheads

SAINT JOHN - A new season - and a new era - begins tonight for the Saint John Sea Dogs.

After losing the majority of their core this off-season due to graduation, the Sea Dogs will have plenty of new faces in the lineup when the team hits the ice this evening against the Halifax Mooseheads. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.

This will be the first match of the 2017-18 CHL season. The Sea Dogs will raise their 2017 President Cup championship banner to the rafters before the game.

Records: This is the first game of the regular season for both clubs. The Sea Dogs were 1-6-1-0 in preseason play while the Mooseheads were 6-3-0-0.

Last games: The Sea Dogs and Mooseheads met last Friday at Scotiabank Centre for a preseason game, which Halifax won 4-3. Benoit-Olivier Groulx, Filip Zadina, Xavier Parent and Kyle Petten all scored for Halifax. Saint John goal scorers were Anthony Boucher, Alexandre Lafreniere and William Poirier. Alexis Gravel made 39 stops in the win. Joel Goguen made 19 stops in the loss.

2016-17 head-to-head: The Sea Dogs were 6-2-0-0 against the Mooseheads last season while Halifax went 2-6-0-0 against Saint John.

Ex-Sea Dogs on the Mooseheads: Goaltender Blade Mann-Dixon

Random stat: Xavier Parent, the fourth overall pick in this year's QMJHL Entry Draft, had a solid three goals and five assists in seven preseason games.

Moosehead to watch: Filip Zadina - expected to make his CHL regular season debut tonight, the highly touted Czech forward is projected to be a top pick in the 2018 NHL Draft.

Notes: Isiah Campbell led Saint John in preseason scoring with a goal and five points... Ben Reid had a team high three goals... Campbell's four assists were a team high... Xavier Parent led the Mooseheads in preseason scoring with three goals and eight points... Parent, Justin Barron, Caleb Rich and Gavin Hart all had three goals... Parent's five assists were a team high... the Mooseheads defeated the Sea Dogs three times during the preseason - all by one goal... former Sea Dogs assistant Jim Midgley will make his full time head coaching debut with the Mooseheads... Josh Dixon will coach his first regular season game with Saint John... all of Saint John's NHL affiliated players have been returned... while Filip Zadina will be the main attraction tonight, Ostap Safin will likely make his Sea Dogs debut.
