Recap: Sea Dogs win 2-1

FINAL: Saint John 2, Gatineau 1
Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
GATINEAU, QC - The Saint John Sea Dogs are heading home with a win.

Alexander Donovan scored with 90 seconds remaining in regulation to lift the Sea Dogs to a 2-1 win over the Gatineau Olympiques on Sunday at Slush Puppie Centre. This was the final game of a three-game Quebec road trip for Saint John, who lost in Shawinigan on Thursday and Sherbrooke on Friday.

The win ended a four-game road losing streak for the Sea Dogs.

Donovan's goal came quickly after a faceoff win in the offensive zone. The Olympiques nearly tied it late but Arseni Radkov made a great cross crease stop to keep Saint John in front.

Angelo Fullerton also scored for Saint John, who were playing without Alexis Jospeh and William Yared. Oliver Groulx had assists on both goals. Radkov made 29 saves in the win as Saint John was outshot 30-19.

Justin Blais scored Gatineau's lone goal. Danai Shaiikov made 17 saves in the loss.

This was a key regulation win for Saint John, who didn't allow Gatineau to earn any points. The Sea Dogs are now six points ahead of the Olympiques in the overall standings.

Game Day 55: at Gatineau

Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
GATINEAU, QC - In what is certainly not the biggest hockey game being played today, the Saint John Sea Dogs will look to end their three-game road trip on a winning note at Slush Puppie Centre.

The Sea Dogs have dropped the first two games of this Quebec trip, losing in Shawinigan on Thursday and Sherbrooke on Friday. They carry a four-game road losing streak into this afternoon's game against the Gatineau Olympiques, which will have a 4 p.m. AT puck drop.

The Sea Dogs and Olympiques are separated by just four points, making this an important game for playoff positioning.

Stream/TV/Radio: FloHockey/None/YouTube

Records: The Sea Dogs are 19-30-5-0 for 43 points (eighth Eastern/15th QMJHL) while the Olympiques are 17-31-4-1 for 39 points (eighth Western/16th QMJHL).

Last games: The Sea Dogs are coming off an 8-5 loss in Sherbrooke on Friday. Angelo Fullerton scored twice for Saint John while singles came from Alexander Donovan, Everett Baldwin and Jabez Seymour. Arseni Radkov was pulled in favour of Rafaël Courchesne in the second period. The Olympiques are coming off a 6-3 loss to the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada on Friday. Justin Boisselle scored twice for Gatineau while Simon Xavier-Cyr added a single. Finn Moffett made 31 saves in the loss.

Recap: Sea Dogs lose 8-5

FINAL: Saint John 5, Sherbrooke 8
Vincent Levesque Rousseau/Sherbrooke Phoenix
SHERBROOKE, QC - The Sherbrooke Phoenix scored four times in the second period and went on to beat the Saint John Sea Dogs 8-5 on Friday at Palais des Sports Léopold-Drolet.

Ilya Kolmakov had a hat trick for the Phoenix; Jayden Plouffe and Thomas Rousseau each scored twice; and Lois Poirier added a single. Parker Stockseth made 29 stops in the win.

Angelo Fullerton scored twice for Saint John while Alexander Donovan, Everett Baldwin and Jabez Seymour had solo markers. Arseni Radkov had a rough night, allowing five goals on 23 shots and was pulled midway through the second period. Rafaël Courchesne allowed three goals on 13 shots in relief.

The Sea Dogs played without leading scorer Alexis Joseph, who was a late scratch.

Saint John trailed 2-1 after one but the wheels really fell off in the second period with the Phoenix grabbing a 5-1 lead at one point.

The Sea Dogs were able to get five goals, which is a positive, but the game was mostly out of reach when they were scored.

Saint John, who has been better on the road than at home for much of the season, has now dropped four straight road games.

Game Day 54: at Sherbrooke

Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
SHERBROOKE, QC - The Saint John Sea Dogs will be looking for a 60-minute performance tonight.

The Sea Dogs fell apart in the third period last night, allowing four goals and 17 shots in a 6-2 loss to the Shawinigan Cataractes. The Sea Dogs had played a fairly solid road game until the third.

Saint John will look for a better performance tonight against the Sherbrooke Phoenix. Game time is 8 p.m. AT.

The Phoenix sit nine points ahead of the Sea Dogs in the overall standings.

This is the second of three games for the Sea Dogs on this Quebec road trip. They close things out on Sunday in Gatineau.

Stream/TV/Radio: FloHockey/None/YouTube

Records: The Sea Dogs are 19-29-5-0 for 43 points (eighth Eastern/15th QMJHL) while the Phoenix are 24-24-4-0 for 52 points (sixth Western/12th QMJHL).

Last games: The Sea Dogs are coming off a 6-2 loss in Shawinigan last night. Julien Wasmer and William Yared scored for Saint John. Rafaël Courchesne made 29 saves in the loss. The Phoenix are coming off a 4-1 home loss to the Val-d'Or Foreurs last night. Jayden Plouffe scored Sherbrooke's lone goal. Kyan Labbé only faced 17 shots in the loss.

Recap: Sea Dogs lose 6-2

FINAL: Saint John 2, Shawinigan 6
Vincent Létourneau/Shawinigan Cataractes
SHAWINIGAN, QC - The Saint John Sea Dogs had a third period collapse on Thursday night in Shawinigan.

The Cataractes scored four times in the third period, breaking a 2-2 tie and going on to post a 6-2 win. Shots were 17-4 in favour of Shawinigan in the third.

The loss ended a two-game winning streak for Saint John.

The Sea Dogs hadn't played too bad of a road game until the third period. Mistakes proved costly as Shawinigan scored on some turnovers and odd-man rushes.

Six different players scored for Shawinigan: Julien Lanthier, Vince Elie, Nathan Ouellet, Elias Schneider, Jiri Klima and Mathieu Plante. Mathys Fernandez made 20 saves in the win.

Julien Wasmer and William Yared scored for Saint John. Rafaël Courchesne made 29 saves in the loss.

This was the second meeting in less than a week between the Sea Dogs and Cataractes. The two met last Saturday at TD Station where Saint John posted a 3-2 overtime win.

Game Day 53: at Shawinigan

Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
SHAWINIGAN, QC
- Can the Saint John Sea Dogs pull off another upset?

The Sea Dogs defeated the Shawinigan Cataractes 3-2 in overtime last Saturday at TD Station in a significant upset. The win ended a five-game losing streak for Saint John.

Now, the two will meet again – but this time in Shawinigan. Game time tonight is 8 p.m. AT.

The Cataractes sit 23 points ahead of the Sea Dogs in the standings, so Saint John will once again be the underdog in this meeting. The two are, oddly, heading in opposite directions right now with Shawinigan having lost four straight while Saint John has won back-to-back games.

This contest kicks off a three-game Quebec road trip for Saint John. They'll also visit Sherbrooke and Gatineau before returning home.

Stream/TV/Radio: FloHockey/None/None

Records: The Sea Dogs are 19-28-5-0 for 43 points (eighth Eastern/15th QMJHL) while the Cataractes are 30-17-2-4 for 66 points (fourth Western/sixth QMJHL).

Last games: The Sea Dogs are coming off a 5-2 home win over the Victoriaville Tigres on Monday. Jabez Seymour, Everett Baldwin, William Yared, Alexis Joseph and Alexander Donovan scored for Saint John. Rafaël Courchesne made 32 saves in the win. The Cataractes are coming off a 6-2 loss in Moncton on Sunday. Cole Chandler and Elias Schneider scored for Shawinigan. Philippe Boucher made 37 stops in the loss.

Olympic Games end for Seed, Italy

Embed from Getty Images
The Olympic Winter Games have come to an end for Jason Seed and Italy's men's hockey team.

The hosts were eliminated in the qualifying round on Tuesday, falling 3-0 to Switzerland.

The former Sea Dogs defenseman, who is a dual Canadian and Italian citizen, played in all four of Italy's games, primarily on the bottom pairing. The Italians, as expected, lost all four games – but what an experience for Seed, who has been playing pro hockey in Italy since the 2022-23 season.

Here are Seed's stats line from all four games.

5-2 loss vs Sweden: 15:13 ice time, -2

3-2 loss vs Slovakia: 11:20 ice time, -1

11-0 loss vs Finland: 13:05 ice time, -5

3-0 loss vs Switzerland: 15:53 ice time, even rating

Seed, who was part of Saint John 2011 and 2012 championship teams, became the sixth Sea Dog to play in an Olympic Winter Games, joining Tomas Jurco (2014 & 2022 - Slovakia), Felix Schütz (2018 - Germany), Jurij Repe (2018 - Slovenia), Stanislav Galiev (2022 - ROC) and Alex Grant (2022 - Canada).

Former Sea Dogs forward Eriks Mateiko had been named to Latvia's roster but he could not play due to a season ending injury. The Latvians were eliminated in Tuesday's qualifying round as well.

The quarterfinals will feature Slovakia taking on Germany, Canada facing Czechia, Finland taking on Switzerland and the United States battling Sweden.

Recap: Sea Dogs win 5-2

FINAL: Victoriaville 2, Saint John 5
Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs picked up a big win on Monday afternoon at TD Station.

The Sea Dogs earned a second straight win, defeating the Victoriaville Tigres 5-2. The win pushes the Sea Dogs into a tie with the Tigres for 14th overall in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League standings. Saint John has played one more game.

After a fairly solid 3-2 overtime win over the Shawinigan Cataractes on Saturday, the Sea Dogs followed that up with a strong victory over the Tigres. The Sea Dogs have struggled at times to win games they should win, so this was a positive sign.

The game never really felt in doubt even when the Tigres tied it up at 1-1 and later cut the deficit to 3-2. The Sea Dogs were able to control much of this game and Rafaël Courchesne had a strong game in net.

Alexis Joseph led the way with a goal and two assists. Jabez Seymour, Everett Baldwin, William Yared and Alexander Donovan added singles. Courchesne made 32 saves.

Victoriaville goals came from Egor Shilov and Enzo Lottin. Gabriel D'Aigle made 34 saves in the loss.

Game Day 52: vs Tigres

Alex Garneau/Victoriaville Tigres
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs and Victoriaville Tigres meet this afternoon in what could be a key game to determine playoff positioning.

The Sea Dogs currently sit 15th overall with 41 points while the Tigres are 14th with 43 points. Saint John has played one more game than Victoriaville.

Game time on this Family Day Monday is 3 p.m. at TD Station.

The Sea Dogs are coming off a strange win over the Shawinigan Cataractes on Saturday, a game that saw Jabez Seymour score all three goals in a 3-2 overtime victory. That ended a five-game losing streak for Saint John.

The Tigres, meanwhile, are wrapping up an unusual Maritime road trip. They played in Cape Breton on Friday and Saturday and are now stopping in Saint John before travelling home.

Stream/TV/Radio: FloHockey/None/Sea Dogs Audio Network

Records: The Sea Dogs are 18-28-5-0 for 41 points (eighth Eastern/15th QMJHL) while the Tigres are 19-26-5-0 for 43 points (seventh Western/14th QMJHL).

Last games: The Sea Dogs are coming off a 3-2 overtime win over the Shawinigan Cataractes on Saturday. Jabez Seymour scored all three goals for Saint John. Rafaël Courchesne made 32 saves in the win. The Tigres are coming off a 5-4 shootout win in Cape Breton on Saturday. Alexey Vlasov scored a pair of goals while Egor Shilov and Brayden Besner added singles. Anthony Catanzariti made 29 saves in the win.

Recap: Sea Dogs win 3-2 (OT)

FINAL: Shawinigan 2, Jabez Seymour 3 (OT)
Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
SAINT JOHN - What a night for Jabez Seymour.

Seymour entered the game with five goals on the entire season. On Saturday night, the Newfoundlander scored his first career QMJHL hat trick to lead the Saint John Sea Dogs to a 3-2 overtime win over the Shawinigan Cataractes.

Seymour opened the scoring in the first period, scored the game-tying goal with 25 seconds remaining in regulation and then netted the overtime winner. Hat tricks don't get much better than that.

The win ends a five-game losing streak for Saint John and a six-game home losing streak. They hadn't won at TD Station since early January.

The Sea Dogs struggled to generate chances for much of the night but found a push in the third period. Shots through 40 minutes were 25-15 in favour of Shawinigan but ended 34-30 in their favour.

Perhaps most impressive about this win are the circumstances it came under. Saint John was playing a man short and had to slide defenseman Everett Baldwin up front. The team also played this game under some fatigue, flying from St. John's to Halifax in the morning and not getting into Saint John until the early afternoon. The long day proved to be worth it.

Dogs missing several regulars vs Cataractes

Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs have been forced to dress an unusual lineup tonight for their game against the Shawinigan Cataractes.

Forward Olivers Murnieks remains out with an injury while Maxime Côté and Angelo Fullerton will both serve one-game suspensions. Fullerton has been suspended for his slew footing match penalty on Thursday while Côté has been automatically suspended for an accumulation of fights.

Defenseman Carl-Otto Magnusson, meanwhile, will serve the second game of his two-game suspension for being an aggressor in Wednesday's game.

Here's what Saint John's projected lineup looks like for tonight.

Rozzi - Groulx - Donovan
Morin - Joseph - Seymour
Krayer - Yared - Baldwin
Héroux - Gauthier

Wasmer - Duhamel
Croteau - Damphousse
Drabczynski - Dunlap
Chartrand

Courchesne
MacPherson

Affiliate defenseman Jesse Dunlap will play his second QMJHL game after debuting on Thursday. Cameron Chartrand, who has been in-and-out of the lineup with nagging back injury, is listed as the seventh defensemen.

The most notable move on defense is who is listed up front. The team has d-man Everett Baldwin playing wing on the third line.

In net, the team has called up affiliate Jase MacPherson from the Kensington Wild to be Rafaël Courchesne's backup. Arseni Radkov is listed as a healthy scratch. Not sure if that's just the Sea Dogs wanting to give MacPherson some exposure to the QMJHL or if there is more to it.

All of this brings up an odd situation: the Sea Dogs are poised to dress no import players and just one overage player.

Tonight's game begins at 7 p.m. at TD Station, which is also unexpected. Could be a weird night ahead.

Game Day 51: vs Cataractes

Jeff Parsons/Newfoundland Regiment
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs will look to snap a five-game losing tonight at TD Station.

The Sea Dogs are coming off what has turned into an eventful trip to Newfoundland. The Sea Dogs lost both games to the Regiment and were scheduled to return home on Friday. But a flight cancellation means they'll be flying into Halifax today, making the drive to Saint John and hosting the Shawinigan Cataractes at 7 p.m.

Tonight's game was originally scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. but was pushed back due to the Sea Dogs' travel issues.

The Sea Dogs were already in for a challenging game – the Cataractes sit fifth overall in the QMJHL standings – and the travel issues probably won't help things.

The Cataractes are on a four-game Maritime road trip. They lost in Charlottetown on Wednesday and in Halifax on Thursday.

Stream/TV/Radio: FloHockey/None/Sea Dogs Audio Network

Records: The Sea Dogs are 17-28-5-0 for 39 points (eighth Eastern/15th QMJHL) while the Cataractes are 30-16-1-4 for 65 points (third Western/fifth QMJHL).

Last games: The Sea Dogs are coming off a 5-1 loss in Newfoundland on Thursday. Alexis Joseph scored Saint John's lone goal. Arseni Radkov made 25 saves in the loss. The Cataractes are coming off a 2-1 shootout loss in Halifax on Thursday. Vince Elie scored Saint John's lone goal. Mathys Fernandez made 31 saves in the loss.

Saturday's start time changed

Jeff Parsons/Newfoundland Regiment
The season series is over but Newfoundland is still causing issues for the Saint John Sea Dogs.

The team announced Friday evening that their home game on Saturday against the Shawinigan Cataractes has been pushed to 7 p.m. due to travel issues. The game was originally scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.

The Sea Dogs were scheduled to fly from St. John's to Halifax on Friday and make the drive home but their flight was cancelled. The team will now fly to Halifax on Saturday, make the drive to Saint John and host Cataractes at 7 p.m., which is far from an ideal situation.

Saint John carries a five-game losing streak and a six-game home losing streak into Saturday's game.

This is the Sea Dogs' Next Gen weekend. On Saturday, social media star Coach Chippy will be making a return to TD Station and the team will wear its CHL Jersey Contest jerseys. The first 1,500 fans will also receive rally towels.

According to the team, "doors will now open for the Meet & Greet with Coach Chippy at 5:00 p.m. Reminder that a ticket to the game is required for entry."

The Sea Dogs will also play on Family Day Monday, hosting the Victoriaville Tigres at 3 p.m.

Recap: Sea Dogs lose 5-1

FINAL: Saint John 1, Newfoundland 5
Jeff Parsons/Newfoundland Regiment
ST. JOHN'S, NL - The Newfoundland Regiment completed the sweep on Thursday.

The Regiment defeated the Saint John Sea Dogs 5-1 at Mary Brown's Centre, taking all eight games in the season series. That includes four one-goal victories at TD Station.

Newfoundland, who are in a fight for playoff positioning in the middle of the standings, have now won five straight games overall. Saint John, meanwhile, have lost five straight and nine of their last 10.

It was a similar script to Wednesday's game as the Regiment grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first period. Saint John didn't have a bad second half of the game but they bad a big hole to dig themselves out of.

Alexis Joseph scored at 1:49 of the second and had a number of chances to cut the deficit more, even having a penalty shot that was stopped by Regiment goaltender Louis-Antoine Denault. The Newfoundland netminder made 27 saves in the win.

Benjamin Veitch, Blake Pilgrim-Edwards, Justin Larose, Maddex Marmulak and Louis-François Bélanger scored for Newfoundland.

Arseni Radkov, who come on in relief of Rafaël Courchesne on Wednesday, made 25 saves in the loss.

Recap: Sea Dogs lose 7-3

FINAL: Saint John 3, Newfoundland 7
Jeff Parsons/Newfoundland Regiment
ST. JOHN'S, NL - After four straight one-goal losses to the Newfoundland Regiment, the Saint John Sea Dogs found themselves out of this one early and never able to get back into it.

The Regiment led 3-0 less than 10 minutes into the game and went on to defeat the Sea Dogs 7-3 at Mary Brown's Centre on Wednesday night.

Newfoundland is now 7-0 against Saint John this season with their final meeting scheduled for Thursday night in St. John's. The two teams are heading in opposite directions as the Regiment have now won four straight while the Sea Dogs have lost four consecutive games and eight of their last nine.

Tyson Goguen scored a pair of goals for Newfoundland while singles came from Liam Arsenault, Ryan Dwyer, Alexis Michaud, Dawson Sharkey and Justin Larose. Louis-Antoine Denault made 18 saves in the win.

Olivier Groulx, Maxime Côté and Vincent Croteau scored for Saint John. Rafaël Courchesne was pulled after allowing three goals on 10 shots in the first period. Arseni Radkov allowed four goals on 20 shots in relief.

The positive for Saint John is that the second half of the game wasn't as bad as the first, so maybe we'll see a tighter contest tomorrow. The Sea Dogs had seven straight power plays beginning in the second period, which helped. Saint John went 2/8 on the man advantage.

Newfoundland, meanwhile, went 2/5 on the power play.

Game Day 49 & 50: at Newfoundland

Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
ST. JOHN'S, NL - The Saint John Sea Dogs will look to turn things around at Mary Brown's Centre this week.

The Sea Dogs have just one win over their past eight games and have lost three straight. Saint John has been better on the road than at home this season though, so perhaps a trip to Newfoundland is just what they need.

Saint John will take on the Regiment tonight and tomorrow night in downtown St. John's. Both games have 6:30 p.m. AT starts.

These will be the final meetings of the season between the Sea Dogs and Regiment. Saint John has yet to beat Newfoundland this season and are 0-2 at Mary Brown's Centre.

Stream/TV/Radio: FloHockey/None/None

Records: The Sea Dogs are 17-26-5-0 for 39 points (eighth Eastern/15th QMJHL) while the Regiment are 29-19-1-1 for 60 points (third Eastern/seventh QMJHL).

Last games: The Sea Dogs and Regiment met on Saturday at TD Station where Newfoundland posted a 5-4 overtime win. Luke Sinclair, Alexis Michaud, Justin Larose, Quinn Norman and Marek Danicek all scored for Newfoundland. Olivier Groulx scored twice for Saint John while Maxime Côté and Angelo Fullerton added singles. Antoine Proulx made 29 saves in the win. Arseni Radkov made 29 stops in the loss.

Men's hockey set to begin at Milano Cortina 2026

The men's hockey tournament begins Wednesday at the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic Winter Games.

There will be one former Saint John Sea Dog playing in the tournament: 34-year-old defenseman Jason Seed, who will suit up for host Italy.

Seed, who is a dual Italian and Canadian citizen, has spent the past four seasons playing pro hockey in Italy.

Italy will play their first game on Wednesday against powerhouse Sweden. They'll also play Slovakia and Finland and will, obviously, be massive underdogs in those games.

The Ottawa native spent parts of three seasons with the Sea Dogs, helping the team win President Cup championships in 2011 and 2012 along with a Memorial Cup title in 2011.

Former Sea Dogs forward Eriks Mateiko, meanwhile, was named to Latvia's Olympic roster but has been ruled out with an injury. Mateiko is in his first year of pro hockey with the AHL's Hershey Bears but had his season come to an end when he was cut by a skate.

According to a release, 26 QMJHL alumni were named to Olympic rosters, which includes Seed and Mateiko.

Other former Sea Dogs to play at the Olympic Winter Games include Tomas Jurco (2014 & 2022 - Slovakia), Felix Schütz (2018 - Germany), Jurij Repe (2018 - Slovenia), Stanislav Galiev (2022 - ROC) and Alex Grant (2022 - Canada).

Sea Dogs look to finally solve Regiment

Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
Will the Saint John Sea Dogs ever beat the Newfoundland Regiment?

It seems like a fair question following Saturday's game at TD Station, which saw the Sea Dogs blow a 3-1 lead in a 5-4 overtime loss. The back-and-forth game was eerily similar to some previous meetings between the two, which also saw Saint John blow multi-goal leads.

The loss dropped the Sea Dogs to 0-4-2-0 against the Regiment this season. Four of those six meetings have come since New Year's Eve – all of which were one-goal losses at TD Station.

Newfoundland 5 @ Saint John 4 (Feb 7 2026) OT
Newfoundland 4 @ Saint John 3 (Jan 11 2026) OT
Newfoundland 5 @ Saint John 4 (Jan 9 2026)
Newfoundland 6 @ Saint John 5 (Dec 31 2025)
Final Saint John 1 @ Newfoundland 5 (Oct 25 2025)
Saint John 3 @ Newfoundland 6 (Oct 24 2025)

The Sea Dogs will make their second and final trip of the season to St. John's this week, taking on the Regiment Wednesday and Thursday night. Game time for both is 6:30 p.m. AT.

As shown above, Saint John's previous trip to St. John's didn't go so well and they'll look to improve upon those outings. Some positive news heading into the week: the Sea Dogs have won more games on the road than at home this season (eight wins at home and nine on the road).

Saint John is 2-11-0-0 all-time at Mary Brown's Centre/Mile One Centre. They haven't won a game in St. John's since Jan. 3, 2008.

One of the keys for Saint John will be trying to slow down Newfoundland's big guns. Marek Danicek has 10 points (six goals and four assists) against the Sea Dogs this season followed by Justin Larose (four goals and five assists), Noah Laberge (two goals and seven assists) and Dawson Sharkey (four goals and three assists).

For the Sea Dogs, Alexis Joseph has five goals and seven assists against the Regiment. A fourth of his goals have come against Newfoundland.

This week's games have importance for both teams. Saint John is just trying to get into the playoffs while Newfoundland is fighting for positioning in the middle of the standings.

Recap: Sea Dogs lose 5-4 (OT)

FINAL: Newfoundland 5, Saint John 4 (OT)
Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
SAINT JOHN - It was a rollercoaster, one that ended in a heartbreaking overtime loss for the Saint John Sea Dogs on Saturday at TD Station.

Marek Danicek scored at 3:08 of overtime to give the Newfoundland Regiment a 5-4 win over the Sea Dogs. The Regiment improved to 6-0 against the Sea Dogs this season with two more games between the two coming up this week in St. John's.

It was an eventful night as it looked like the Sea Dogs, having one of their better showings of late, had a good chance of winning in regulation. Then it turned into looking like they had no chance of even getting the game to overtime.

Saint John led 3-1 in the second period and carried a 3-2 lead into the third. The Regiment then scored twice in the final frame to take a 4-3 advantage.

Just as the Sea Dogs were trying to start a late-game press, Everett Baldwin was called for a slash at 19:06, sending the Regiment to the man advantage. Saint John pulled their goaltender just to make it even strength and, at 19:47, managed to net the equalizer to send the match into overtime.
The Sea Dogs were able to kill off the remainder of the Baldwin penalty in extra time but couldn't stop the dangerous Danicek on an odd-man rush.

Luke Sinclair, Alexis Michaud, Justin Larose and Quinn Norman also scored for Newfoundland. Antoine Proulx made 29 saves in the win.

Groulx scored a pair of goals for Saint John while Maxime Côté and Angelo Fullerton had solo markers. Arseni Radkov made 29 saves in the loss.

The Sea Dogs have now lost seven of their last eight games and six straight home games.

Game Day 48: vs Regiment

Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs and Newfoundland Regiment are about to get quite familiar.

The two will play three straight games against each other with the first meeting taking place tonight at 7 p.m. at TD Station. The next two games will take place in St. John's later this week.

Saint John has struggled mightily against Newfoundland this season, currently sporting a 0-4-1-0 against their old provincial rivals. That includes three straight losses at TD Station, all of which have taken place since New Year's Eve.

These points are valuable for both teams. Newfoundland is in a fight for playoff positioning in the middle of the standings while Saint John is just trying to stay in the race for the final couple spots.

Stream/TV/Radio: FloHockey/None/Sea Dogs Audio Network

Records: The Sea Dogs are 17-26-4-0 for 38 points (eighth Eastern/15th QMJHL) while the Regiment are 28-19-1-1 for 56 points (third Eastern/seventh QMJHL).

Last games: The Sea Dogs are coming off a 5-2 loss to the Moncton Wildcats last night at TD Station. Alexander Donovan and Bo Damphousse scored for Saint John. Rafaël Courchesne made 31 saves in the win. The Regiment are coming off a 5-2 win in Charlottetown last night. Marek Danicek scored twice for Newfoundland while singles came from Alexis Michaud, Liam Arsenault and Dawson Sharkey. Louis-Antoine Denault made 24 saves in the win.

Recap: Sea Dogs lose 5-2

FINAL: Saint John 2, Moncton 5
Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs were no match for the first-place Moncton Wildcats on Friday at TD Station.

The Wildcats won an eighth straight game and nearly registered a third consecutive shutout, defeating the Sea Dogs 5-2. Moncton was in control all night long, leading 5-0 late in the third period. Alexander Donovan and Bo Damphousse scored with less than 90 seconds remaining.

St. Andrews native Gabe Smith scored twice for Moncton while singles came from Evan Depatie, Teddy Mutryn and Kuzma Voronin. Captain Caleb Desnoyers recorded three assists.

Backup netminder Jacoby Weiner made 31 saves and nearly recorded a second straight shutout. He showed some frustration when Donovan scored at 18:56 of the third.

Rafaël Courchesne made 31 stops in the loss.

The Sea Dogs, coming off a 2-0 loss to the Baie-Comeau Drakkar on Sunday in Fredericton, were nearly shutout for a second straight game. The team's power play, which was so good throughout January, is 0/7 over the past two games.

Saint John fell to 1-6-0-0 against the Wildcats this season. They have one regular season meeting remaining.

Game Day 47: vs Wildcats

Daniel St. Louis/Moncton Wildcats
SAINT JOHN - A difficult task awaits the Saint John Sea Dogs tonight.

The Sea Dogs will host the Moncton Wildcats at 7 p.m. at TD Station. Moncton sits first overall in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League standings and have won seven straight games. On top of that, they have not allowed a goal in their past two games.

Saint John, meanwhile, is coming off a disappointing 2-0 loss to the last-place Baie-Comeau Drakkar on Sunday in Fredericton. The team is no doubt looking to put that performance behind them with a strong outing tonight – but that will be a difficult task.

The Sea Dogs are 1-5-0-0 against the Wildcats this season with their lone win coming way back in October. They have kept a few of the other games close, so we'll see what happens in this one.

Stream/TV/Radio: FloHockey/None/Sea Dogs Audio Network

Notebook: Fredericton games conclude

Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
The Capital City Series ended in disappointment for the Saint John Sea Dogs.

The Sea Dogs played their third and final regular season game at Fredericton's Aitken Centre on Sunday, falling 2-0 to the last-place Baie-Comeau Drakkar. The loss gives the Sea Dogs a losing record in Fredericton, finishing 1-2-0-0.

The Sea Dogs defeated the Gatineau Olympiques 5-1 on Jan. 8 and fell 5-2 to the Cape Breton Eagles on Nov. 30.

Attendance for the series saw mixed results. These numbers are bit higher than what the eye test would say.
Sunday, Nov. 30: 3,103
Thursday, Jan. 8: 1,845
Sunday, Feb. 1: 2,345
The series didn't seem to get much hype online from UNB while reaction from Saint John fans wasn't, understandably, overly positive. We'll see what the organization thinks, but it doesn't feel like there is a huge desire to do this series again. But we'll see.

WRESTLING NIGHT
The Sea Dogs announced the return of Wresting Night this week.

Hockey and professional wrestling collide as the Saint John Sea Dogs present Wrestling Night presented by Papadopsmiles Orthodontics on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 7:00 p.m.

On the ice, the Sea Dogs will celebrate a wrestling icon by wearing special Stone Cold Steve Austin-themed jerseys as they battle the Charlottetown Islanders at TD Station. Game-worn jerseys will be auctioned online at sjseadogs.link/auctions.

Wrestling Night will feature appearances from two legendary wrestlers. “The Man Beast” Rhyno, a former ECW World Heavyweight Champion, WCW United States Champion and WWE SmackDown Tag Team Champion, will be in attendance, along with “The Masterpiece” Chris Masters, a former WWE and TNA standout known for his iconic Masterlock Challenge.

Plus, two live wrestling matches will take place inside the Moosehead Light Ice Bar, with one match during each intermission. Rhyno will face “The Muscle Beast” Wesley Pipes for the AIWF Canadian Heavyweight Championship, while Masters will square off against “The Ace of the Maritimes” Dick Durning for the Superstars of Wrestling Heavyweight Championship.
The Sea Dogs are 1-5-0-0 when wearing specialty jerseys this season.

Are we heading towards a Sea Dogs/Wildcats playoff series?

Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
Are we poised for an all-New Brunswick matchup in the opening round of the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League playoffs?

The Moncton Wildcats, thanks to a seven-game winning streak, have taken over top spot in the Eastern Conference (and the league) while the Sea Dogs, mostly thanks to the Rimouski Oceanic's nine-game losing skid, now sit eighth in the conference.

That's the long way of saying: if the playoffs started today, the Sea Dogs and Wildcats would meet in the opening round.

Saint John would be major underdogs in the series – but that will be the case no matter who they face. A series against the Wildcats would at least offer some intrigue most other opponents wouldn't and hopefully develop more of a rivalry between the two.

Despite being in the league together for over 20 years, the two have never been able to development much of a rivalry beyond geography. The lone playoff matchup between the two  (I'm not counting the 2021 provincial tournament thing) came in the QMJHL final in 2010 – and that was pretty much the only season both have been competitive at the same time.

The Sea Dogs are 1-5-0-0 against the Wildcats this season with their lone win coming way back in October. The two meet again on Friday at TD Station.

Here's what the QMJHL playoffs would look like if they started today.

Eastern Conference
1) Moncton vs 8) Saint John
2) Chicoutimi vs 7) Halifax
3) Cape Breton vs 6) Quebec
4) Newfoundland vs 5) Charlottetown

Western Conference
1) Blainville-Boisbriand vs 8) Rimouski
2) Drummondville vs 7) Victoriaville
3) Shawinigan vs 6) Sherbrooke
4) Rouyn-Noranda vs 5) Val-d'Or

Some fun matchups here, including rivalry series between Moncton/Saint John, Drummondville/Victoriaville and Rouyn-Noranda/Val-d'Or. Newfoundland/Charlottetown would likely be nasty.

The Gatineau Olympiques and Baie-Comeau Drakkar would be the two teams to miss the playoffs. The Rimouski Oceanic would move to the Western Conference side and become the eighth seed.

A reminder that teams will be reseeded based on the overall league standings in the second round.

Flames trade Poirier to Stars

Calgary Wranglers
Jeremie Poirier has a new home.

The Calgary Flames traded the former Saint John Sea Dogs defenseman to the Dallas Stars on Monday in exchange for defenseman Gavin White.

Poirier, who has spent all of this season with the AHL's Calgary Wranglers, was assigned to the AHL's Texas Stars by Dallas.
The 23-year-old was a third-round pick of the Flames in the 2020 NHL Draft. He has spent his entire professional career with the Wranglers, recording 18 goals and 84 assists in 198 games over four seasons. The offensive d-man has yet to appear in an NHL game.

This season, Poirier has a goal and five assists 35 games.

Texas currently sits 11th in the 17-team Western Conference with a 20-19-3-1 record. The Stars host the Manitoba Moose on Friday.

Poirier spent four seasons with the Sea Dogs, recording 51 goals and 117 assists in 225 career QMJHL games. He appeared in just 11 playoff games during that span but did help Saint John win the 2022 Memorial Cup on home ice.

Poirier is one of several members of Saint John's 2022 championship team currently playing in the AHL. The others are Philippe Daoust (Belleville Senators), William Villeneuve (Toronto Marlies), Raivis Ansons (Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins), Riley Bezeau (Cleveland Monsters) and Vincent Sevigny (Syracuse Crunch).

Recap: Sea Dogs lose 2-0

FINAL: Baie-Comeau 2, Saint John 0
Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
FREDERICTON - A night after one of their best offensive performances of the season, the Saint John Sea Dogs were shutout 2-0 by the last-place Baie-Comeau Drakkar on Sunday at the Aitken Centre.

The Sea Dogs, despite limiting the Drakkar to just seven dangerous shots, couldn't buy a goal after tying a season high with seven on Saturday night in Charlottetown. Baie-Comeau had a solid defensive performance, blocking a lot of shots and not allowing Saint John to stay in the offensive zone for long periods.

Saint John trailed 1-0 after the first period. It wasn't until the third when the Sea Dogs were finally able to press at times, outshooting the Drakkar 17-8 in the final 20 minutes. Zachary Morin came the closest to tying the game when he fired a one-timer off the iron.

Jacopo De Luca scored on a wraparound at 14:01 of the third to make it 2-0. Liam Armit scored Baie-Comeau's first period marker.

Goaltender Samuel Caulfield was named first star, making 39 saves to earn his second shutout of the season.

Arseni Radkov made 29 stops in the loss.

The win ended a five-game losing streak for the Drakkar, who were playing their third game in three days.

This was the final meeting of the season between the Sea Dogs and Drakkar and Baie-Comeau managed to earn three points. Saint John won 4-3 in overtime in Baie-Comeau back in December.

Game Day 46: vs Drakkar

Mike Bernard/Charlottetown Islanders
FREDERICTON - The Saint John Sea Dogs will be looking to ride some momentum this afternoon at the Aitken Centre.

The Sea Dogs are coming off a big 7-3 win over the Charlottetown Islanders last night at Eastlink Centre, a victory that saw them grab a 4-0 lead in the first period. While the Islanders didn't do themselves many favours last night, credit to the Sea Dogs for taking advantage – which isn't something they've always been able to do this season.

Saint John ended a four-game losing skid last night and will look for their second straight win today when they host the last-place Baie-Comeau Drakkar. Game time is 3 p.m.

The Drakkar have lost five straight games and sit 10 points back of the Sea Dogs.

This will be Saint John's third and final regular season game at the Aitken Centre this season. They are 1-1-0-0 so far in the Capital City Series, falling to the Cape Breton Eagles but earning a win over the Gatineau Olympiques.
