POSTSCRIPT: Mooseheads 3, Sea Dogs 4

A collection of recaps from last night’s 4-3 Saint John Sea Dogs win over the Halifax Mooseheads…

Our recap. The Saint John Sea Dogs scored twice on the power play and once shorthanded in a 4-3 victory over the Halifax Mooseheads in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action at Harbour Station.

Metro Halifax’s recap. “He had a good game — he had the goalie beat at the end, went high glove and hit the cross-bar,” Ducharme said of Nathan MacKinnon.

SN Live Blog Replay. The Dogs had a bunch of shorthanded scoring chances.

MISSING IN ACTION: Forward Devon Oliver-Dares missed the game because of a broken collarbone. Forward Oliver Cooper and defenseman Ian Saab were both healthy scratches.

WELCOME BACK: Forward Jason Cameron returned to the Sea Dogs’ lineup after missing the past four games due to suspension. He had no points and one shot while playing on the fourth line with Grant West and Aidan Kelly.

STREAK GOES ON: The victory extended Saint John’s winning streak to 12 games. They have not lost since January 12 against Shawinigan. The Sea Dogs won 15 straight games last year.

STREAK ENDS: The Mooseheads’s winning streak ended at four games with the loss. Their last loss was on February 11 against Shawinigan.

MacKINNON: Mooseheads superstar Nathan MacKinnon was a game-time decision with a thumb injury but did indeed play. He had an assist in the game and a couple of solid scoring chances. With the Dogs leading by one late in the third, the 16-year old hit the post.

SCORING FIRST: The Sea Dogs improved to an impressive 30-2-0-0 record when scoring first.

MAJOR: The big controversy last night came in the second period when Martin Frk smoked Ryan Tesink with a big open ice hit. Tesink had his down and ran into Frk. Although the hit looked fairly clean, Frk was tossed from the game and the Sea Dogs were given a five-minute power play.

Mooseheads head coach Dominique Ducharme was not happy over the penalty, telling the Chronicle Herald:

"I was surprised he got a penalty at all," Ducharme said. "Marty wasn’t even moving. The guy was skating with his head down and I think the guy hit Marty more than Marty hit him. I think Marty just protected himself."

The Sea Dogs didn’t do much on the power play as Tomas Jurco headed to the box for four minutes less than two minutes later. The Dogs would score during the four-on-four, though.

SHORTHANDED: Jonathan Huberdeau fed Charlie Coyle on a shorthanded two-on-none at 12:32 to score what would be the game-winner. The Sea Dogs were dangerous shorthanded all night long.

POWER PLAY: Special teams were a big story last night. The Sea Dogs went 2/5 on the power play while the Mooseheads went 2/6. Saint John scored two power play goals, a shorthanded marker, and a four-on-four goal.

HUBERDEAU: Jonathan Huberdeau continued his hot play, recording four points – one goal and three assists – last night. Huberdeau, the QMJHL’s second star this past week, is on a six-game point scoring streak. Over that span, he has an incredible eight goals and 10 assists. Overall this season, the Florida Panthers prospect has 20 goals and 56 points in just 27 games.

COYLE: After being held pointless last Friday against Quebec, Charlie Coyle netted the game-winner last night. He now has 10 goals and eight assists on the season and has scored in nine of his 13 games as a Sea Dog.

BEAULIEU: Nathan Beaulieu had a big game offensively last night, recording three assists. Beaulieu is now on a seven-game point streak, having recorded 13 assists over that span. He has 43 points in 44 games this year.

STANDINGS: The Sea Dogs are once again one-point ahead of Shawinigan for first overall in the league standings. Both teams have 10 games remaining.

NOTES: It was Toonie Tuesday at Harbour Station. A solid crowd of 4,889 attended the game… Charles Roussel and Nathan Beaulieu each had six shots. Zack Phillips had five… Stephen MacAulay had five hits… MacAulay and Aidan Kelly were the only Sea Dogs without shots… Jonathan Drouin had two goals for Halifax. It was the rookie’s first two-goal game... Sebastien Auger improved to 11-2-0-2 with the win.

NEXT GAME: The Dogs travel up the highway to Moncton on Saturday to face the Wildcats at 7pm.
