FINAL: Saint John 3, Drummondville 2 (SO)
DRUMMONDVILLE, Que. – Marc-Olivier Brouillard’s late game
heroics weren’t enough as his Drummondville Voltigeurs fell 3-2 in a shootout
to the Saint John Sea Dogs on Friday night in Quebec Major Junior Hockey League
action at the Marcel Dionne Centre.
Brouillard tied the game with 28 seconds remaining in
third period, ultimately sending it to a shootout. Jonathan Huberdeau and Tomas
Jurco both scored for Saint John in the breakaway contest while Sebastien Auger
stopped both shots he faced.
Guillaume Gauthier had the other Drummondville regulation
time goal. Charlie Coyle and Ryan Tesink scored for Saint John. Auger made 29
saves in net for the win while Domenic Graham made 43 stops in the loss.
The Volts scored first as Gauthier netted his seventh
marker of the season at 7:58 of the second period. Coyle tied it on the power
play at 13:03. Tesink put the Dogs ahead 2-1 at 1:36 of third period but the
Dogs couldn’t hold onto the lead as the Volts tied it in the final minute.
Saint John then scored on both of their shootout attempts while Drummondville
went scoreless.
It was quite a feisty game as the teams combined for 48
penalty minutes. There was plenty of roughing calls and rough stuff after
whistles. Saint John went 1-for-7 on the power play while Drummondville went
0-for-4.
The win gives the Sea Dogs their sixth straight win and a
record of 37-13-0-2 for 75 points. They still sit one-point up on the
Shawinigan Cataractes for first-place in the league.
Some other stuff on the game:
- The Sea Dogs are on a big time run right now. They’ve won six straight and are 9-1-0-0 in their last 10 games.
- Maxime Villemaire returned to the Saint John lineup. He was a -1, had two penalty minutes and three hits against his former team.
- Two assists for Nathan Beaulieu.
- It’s been a while since we wrote “Huberdeau and Jurco scored in the shootout to give Saint John the win.” Feels good.
- Solid commentary by Grant West on News 88.9 tonight.
- Saint John improved to 3-0 against Drummondville this season.
- Unbelievable performance by Jerry Seinfeld at the Station tonight.
The live blog returns tomorrow when the Sea Dogs take on
the Cataractes at 5pm. Buckle up.
