SaintJohnSeaDogs.com’s recap. Friday’s Quebec Major
Junior Hockey League action saw the Saint John Sea Dogs defeat the Chicoutimi
Sagueneens with a 4-3 shootout decision in Chicoutimi.
MISSING IN ACTION: Ryan Kelly (healthy), Michael
Mastrangelo (healthy), Benjamin Hade (upper body), Pierre Durepos (hip),
Mackenzie Brown (knee), Matthew Highmore (shoulder), and Spencer Smallman
(shoulder) did not play for Saint John.
SCORING FIRST: The Sea Dogs scored first in a game for
just the fourth time this season. They are now 3-1-0-0 on the season when
netting the first marker.
SEED: Jason Seed scored his first regular season goal as a Sea
Dog in the first period, opening the scoring and giving Saint John an early 1-0
lead. Seed has played in 93 regular season games with the Dogs over parts of
three seasons. The 20-year defenseman did have one goal in the playoffs last
season.
Seed had one regular season goal with the Gatineau
Olympiques in 2009-10.
HUBERDEAU: Jonathan Huberdeau had a very Jonathan
Huberdeau like performance on Friday. The Sea Dogs captain had a goal, assist,
six shots, and scored the only goal in the shootout. He also had a great chance
late in the second period to put the Sea Dogs ahead but he could not connect.
Huberdeau now has 10 goals and eight assists in 12 games
this year.
IZACKY: Import forward Jakub Izacky scored his first
QMJHL goal at 15:59 of the third period, giving Saint John a late 3-2 lead at
the time. Izacky, who was scratched last weekend, now has a goal and two
assists in 10 games.
TIED: The Sags tied the game at 19:19 of the third on a
bit of a controversial goal. It was reviewed and called a good goal. That sent
the game to overtime and ended any hope of Saint John getting their first
regulation win since September 30. The Dogs have just one other win this month
and that came in a shootout as well.
AUGER: Sea Dogs goaltender Sebastien Auger took a
roughing penalty at 18:42 of the third. According to Hockey DB, it was the
first penalty of Auger’s QMJHL career.
RECORD: The win gives the Sea Dogs a record of 6-6-0-0 on
the season, putting them back at .500. They have not gone two games under the
.500 winning percentage mark this season.
CLOUTIER: Former Sea Dogs defenseman Guillaume Cloutier was
a -1 and had one shot on goal against his former team. Cloutier was traded to
Chicoutimi during the 2010-11 season in the Eric Gelinas trade.
NAMES: The Sagueneens dressed a lineup that likely is not
liked by play-by-play people. Three Tremblays – Simon, Tristan, and Carl – and
three Gagnons – Michael, Gabriel, and Mathieu – were all playing for Chicoutimi
last night.
EXTRA TIME: The Sea Dogs are now 3-0 in games that have
required extra time this season. They’ve won one game in overtime and two in a
shootout.
NOTES: Sagueneens star Charles Hudon did not play due to
concussion symptoms… both teams went 1-for-6 on the power play… Stephen
MacAulay was a -2… Jonathan Huberdeau and Ryan Tesink each had six shots… Devon
Oliver-Dares had three hits… Lukas Sedlak and Mathieu Gagnon each had two
assists for Chicoutimi… Guillaume Asselin had six shots… Alexandre Roy had
three hits… solid music and sound effects at the Georges Vezina Centre... the
Sags are in Saint John next Sunday for a rematch.
