Sea Dogs debut dark Under Armour jerseys

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs debuted a new look on Tuesday at TD Station.

For the first time, the Sea Dogs took to the ice in their dark Under Armour jerseys, featuring the club's blue, black and grey colours. Tuesday's playoff match against the Moncton Wildcats was Saint John's first home game since the jerseys arrived.

After waiting nearly all season for the corrected Under Armour jerseys to arrive, Saint John debuted their new white jerseys on March 20 in Sydney – the final weekend of the regular season. The club has worn the new white jerseys on the road four times.

The majority of teams across the CHL have been wearing Under Armour jerseys since opening night in September. Saint John announced on Sept. 18 that the new jerseys would be delayed.

Two teams in the QMJHL – the Sea Dogs and Halifax Moosheads – had been wearing old CCM jerseys all season. The CCM logos were covered over.

It was announced last May that Under Armour would replace CCM as the CHL's official jersey provider. The switch hasn't come without problems. A number of teams reportedly had errors with their new looks. 

The Sea Dogs unveiled their updated logo and mockups of the new jerseys at an event during the summer. The Sea Dogs had been wearing the same styled jersey since the 2009-10 season.

Sea Dogs finally debut Under Armour jerseys

It took until the final weekend of the regular season for the Saint John Sea Dogs to debut their new jerseys.

For the first time, the Sea Dogs wore their white Under Armour branded jerseys – which includes the team's updated logo – on Friday night in Sydney. 

The majority of teams across the CHL have been wearing Under Armour jerseys since opening night in September. Saint John announced on Sept. 18 that the new jerseys would be delayed. Not many expected correct versions to take until mid-March to arrive.

Two teams in the QMJHL – the Sea Dogs and Halifax Moosheads – have been wearing old CCM jerseys all season. The CCM logos were covered over.

Reds win AUS title again; standings update

They've done it again.

For an eighth straight season, the UNB Reds are Atlantic University Sport men's hockey champions.

The Reds clinched the best-of-three final with a 4-1 victory over the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleus on Thursday night at the Aitken Centre. Moncton won the Game 1, 4-3, in Fredericton on Sunday but UNB took Game 2, scoring in the final second of overtime to earn a 4-3 win.

Moncton scored first in Thursday's deciding game only for UNB to net four unanswered goals.

Former Saint John Sea Dogs Nick Blagden and Leighton Carruthers were in the UNB lineup on Thursday. Peter Reynolds, meanwhile, has not played since January due to an injury.

Former Sea Dog Jeremie Jacob dressed for the Aigles Bleus. Justin Gendron did not play for a second straight game.

By UNB standards, this was an odd season. The team struggled at times during the regular season and were six points back of first with a month to go – yet they still pulled it off, finishing in top spot. In the playoffs, they trailed the AUS final 1-0 but still pulled off the series win. In short, a season that didn't feel like a UNB season ends... just like a UNB season.

The season isn't over for UNB or UdeM. They've both qualified for the University Cup tournament, which begins next Thursday at Halifax's Scotiabank Centre. The tournament is being hosted by Saint Mary's University.

Notebook: Fredericton games conclude

The Capital City Series ended in disappointment for the Saint John Sea Dogs.

The Sea Dogs played their third and final regular season game at Fredericton's Aitken Centre on Sunday, falling 2-0 to the last-place Baie-Comeau Drakkar. The loss gives the Sea Dogs a losing record in Fredericton, finishing 1-2-0-0.

The Sea Dogs defeated the Gatineau Olympiques 5-1 on Jan. 8 and fell 5-2 to the Cape Breton Eagles on Nov. 30.

Attendance for the series saw mixed results. These numbers are bit higher than what the eye test would say.

Sunday, Feb. 1: 2,345

The series didn't seem to get much hype online from UNB while reaction from Saint John fans wasn't, understandably, overly positive. We'll see what the organization thinks, but it doesn't feel like there is a huge desire to do this series again. But we'll see.

WRESTLING NIGHT

The Sea Dogs announced the return of Wresting Night this week.

Hockey and professional wrestling collide as the Saint John Sea Dogs present Wrestling Night presented by Papadopsmiles Orthodontics on Saturday, Feb. 28 at 7:00 p.m.

On the ice, the Sea Dogs will celebrate a wrestling icon by wearing special Stone Cold Steve Austin-themed jerseys as they battle the Charlottetown Islanders at TD Station. Game-worn jerseys will be auctioned online at sjseadogs.link/auctions.

Wrestling Night will feature appearances from two legendary wrestlers. “The Man Beast” Rhyno, a former ECW World Heavyweight Champion, WCW United States Champion and WWE SmackDown Tag Team Champion, will be in attendance, along with “The Masterpiece” Chris Masters, a former WWE and TNA standout known for his iconic Masterlock Challenge.

Plus, two live wrestling matches will take place inside the Moosehead Light Ice Bar, with one match during each intermission. Rhyno will face “The Muscle Beast” Wesley Pipes for the AIWF Canadian Heavyweight Championship, while Masters will square off against “The Ace of the Maritimes” Dick Durning for the Superstars of Wrestling Heavyweight Championship.

The Sea Dogs are 1-5-0-0 when wearing specialty jerseys this season.

Notebook: Dogs to honour Fredericton Canadiens

For a second time this season, the Saint John Sea Dogs will wear some AHL inspired threads.

Back in November, the Sea Dogs wore Saint John Flames jerseys that were redesigned to match the Sea Dogs' current blue, black and grey colours. On Sunday, the team will wear the blue, white and red of the Fredericton Canadiens.

The team teased the jerseys that they'll wear Sunday afternoon at the Aitken Centre earlier this week.

The Canadiens played at the Aitken Centre in the 1990s. They relocated to Quebec City in 1999.

This will be the sixth time this season the Sea Dogs wear a speciality jersey. They are 1-4-0-0 so far.

A season of specialty jerseys

The Saint John Sea Dogs are set to wear specialty jerseys for a fifth time this season.

On Saturday, the Sea Dogs will host the Sherbrooke Phoenix on Superhero Night at TD Station. For one night only, "the Sea Dogs will be wearing special edition superhero-inspired jerseys, which are now up for auction on DASH. All net proceeds from the game-worn jersey auction will go straight to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, an organization dedicated to creating life-changing wishes for children with critical illnesses."

Note that Saturday's game time is 4 p.m.

This will be the first time the Sea Dogs have worn superhero-inspired jerseys. The team has increased its specialty jersey usage in recent seasons, wearing a few already this year.

Saturday won't be the last time the Sea Dogs sport a different look this season. The team is taking part in the Real Atlantic Superstore Jersey Design Contest again this season and are also expected to wear specialty jerseys honouring wrestling night and St. Patrick's Day. 

The Sea Dogs have also previously announced that they'll wear Fredericton Canadiens jerseys during their Feb. 1 "home" game at the Aitken Centre.

Including that Fredericton game, the Sea Dogs have 10 home games remaining and will wear specialty jerseys for five of them. That gives the team just five home games to wear their new Under Armour jerseys – if they ever arrive.

Notebook: Groulx named Dogs captain

SAINT JOHN - Olivier Groulx has been named captain of the Saint John Sea Dogs, the team announced Thursday.

Veteran forward Jacob Beaulieu along with overagers Angelo Fullerton and Natan Éthier have all been named alternate captains.

“We are delighted to name Olivier, Angelo, Natan and Jacob as our captains for the upcoming season,” Sea Dogs head coach and general manager Travis Crickard said in a news release. “Olivier has earned the captaincy because he fully embodies our team’s values of humble, hunger and honour every day.”

Groulx is the 24th captain in franchise history and will play his third season with the Sea Dogs. The 18-year-old wore an 'A' last season.

HALIFAX TO HOST

The QMJHL Entry Draft is coming east.

During the league's season opening press conference on Tuesday, it was confirmed that Halifax will host the 2026 QMJHL Entry Draft, which is scheduled for June 5-6.

“The QMJHL is very pleased and excited to hold its 2026 draft presented by Fenplast in the beautiful city of Halifax, a very important market in our league,"said QMJHL commissioner Mario Cecchini in a statement. "The players, families and teams present at the draft will be able to fully enjoy the beautiful attractions of the city.”

It's the first time the event will be held in Halifax.

Quebec City hosted the draft this past June. Moncton hosted in 2024.

Also, it sounds like the OHL may have an in-person draft in the near future as well.

New Sea Dogs jerseys delayed

Fans hoping to see the Saint John Sea Dogs' new look this weekend will have to wait.

The Sea Dogs confirmed Thursday that they will not be debuting their new Under Armour produced jerseys when they begin the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League regular season on Friday at TD Station. Instead, they'll be sporting the same CCM produced white jerseys they've worn for many years.  

In a statement posted on Facebook, the Sea Dogs said their "brand-new uniforms are not quite ready." It's believed the colouring of both the dark and white jerseys were not correct and it will take some time for Under Armour to produce the correct versions.

A date for when the corrected jerseys will arrive has not yet been confirmed.

This is the first year for Under Armour as the CHL's jersey supplier. As Sportslogos.net notes, the Sea Dogs are not the only CHL team impacted by the issue.

The Newfoundland Regiment, meanwhile, announced Thursday that fans will not yet be able to purchase jerseys. "Unfortunately, we must inform you that due to unforeseen manufacturer delays and quality control concerns with the CHL's official jersey supplier, jerseys will not be available for purchase at this week's games," the club wrote on Facebook. "This issue has affected teams across the CHL, and these circumstances are entirely beyond our team's control. We are working closely with the supplier to resolve the issue as quickly as possible."

Sea Dogs give peek at new look

SAINT JOHN – The past couple weeks have given fans the first true look at the Saint John Sea Dogs' new uniform setup.

The Sea Dogs debuted their new blue Bauer branded helmets, pants and gloves at training camp and sported them during pre-season play. The new look is quite noticeable given that the Sea Dogs have moved away from the black equipment they've worn nearly every season since they entered the league.

The pants also include the team's updated logo, which was unveiled this summer.

The Sea Dogs have been wearing old jerseys and socks during training camp and pre-season games. The team's full new uniform – which will include Under Armour branded jerseys – will presumably debut at their regular season opener, which will take place Sept. 19 at TD Station.

The Saint John Sea Dogs will play just two three-in-threes this season – with only one of those games classified as a road game.

The Sea Dogs will play three games in three days Nov. 28-20 and March 13-15. The November stretch is technically three straight home games – but the third game will be played in Fredericton. In March, Saint John will play back-to-back home games before playing a road game the next day.

The Sea Dogs will make four trips to Quebec this season but all of them will be stretches of three games in four nights.

ADDED PRE-SEASON GAME

It looks like the Sea Dogs have added a game to their pre-season schedule.

The game still doesn't appear on the league website, but the Charlottetown Islanders have begun promoting an pre-season game against the Sea Dogs on Sept. 6. The game is scheduled to be played at MacLaughlin Arena on the UPEI campus.

This would be the sixth and final pre-season game for the Sea Dogs. Saint John is also scheduled to play the night before in Woodstock against the Moncton Wildcats.

The Sea Dogs will play the Wildcats four times in the pre-season; the Newfoundland Regiment once and the Islanders once.

Saint John's first exhibition game will be Tuesday, Aug. 19 in Dieppe against the Wildcats.

Sea Dogs welcome "Next Wave"

SAINT JOHN - While the Saint John Sea Dogs unveiled their new logo, wordmark and jerseys on Saturday night, the team also went into detail about what the "Next Wave" means.

The "Next Wave" slogan has been appearing of Sea Dogs creative for a bit now. At Saturday's event, team president Trevor Georgie explained why this specific term is being used.

"It's not the new wave, because that would imply what happened before wasn't good," Georgie explained to the crowd in attendance. "The word 'next' is absolutely integral to this, because next means you're up next. To do something again, to repeat, to continue, some continuity. Waves don't just go and have new ones come through. It's always the next one coming in and coming in."

Georgie referenced the Bay of Fundy's famous tides, comparing them to the cyclical nature of junior hockey.

"Very much like the junior hockey cycle, very much like our cycle. Slow, precise, patient and powerful. And at the end of the day, the water line is here. Then it starts, and it comes right back up. 

"2005, the Sea Dogs were born. Young franchise bred into the league. Six years later, championship. The seventh season, championship. The tide came down, the tide came up, 2017 championship. The tide came down, the tide came up, 2022 championship."

A number of players from last year's Sea Dogs team were in attendance along with many newcomers who were in town for development camp. Georgie spoke to them directly in his speech.

"It is not our hope that you young men in this room continue on that tradition as the next wave. It is our expectation," said Georgie. "Hope is not a strategy. It is our expectation. It is not our hope that you leave a lasting impact on this community. It is our expectation."

Sea Dogs head coach and general manager Travis Crickard also spoke briefly, welcoming players and family into town.

"As we move into this part of our phase where we compete, contend and become champions, there are many of you in this room and your families who will be key members of them," said Crickard. "So I'm really happy to have all of you here this weekend for this development camp so we can start this next wave off together on a nice July weekend in Saint John."

At an event held at The Country Club on the Boardwalk on Saturday, the team unveiled an updated logo and jerseys. It's the first logo redesign since the club entered the QMJHL in 2005. As for the jersey, the Sea Dogs have been wearing nearly the same design since the 2009-10 season.

Here's a look at the revamped logo, which still resembles the team's original logo.

And here's a look at the team's new home and away jerseys, which are notably Under Armour branded – the CHL's new jersey supplier.

The Sea Dogs will not have a third jersey for this coming season.

QUISPAMSIS - The Saint John Sea Dogs are poised to make a major announcement at a private event on Saturday.

In an email to invitees, Sea Dogs president Trevor Georgie said the team will unveil an "evolved brand."

Over the past year, we’ve been working closely with a top-tier design agency—renowned for its work with NHL teams and major professional sports brands—to evolve the Sea Dogs identity. 

As we look ahead to the future while honouring 20 seasons of history, we invite you to be the first to experience the next wave of Sea Dogs hockey, both on and off the ice. This will be the official first look at our evolved brand, and we’ll also be joined by several of our young players and recently drafted Sea Dogs.

Over the past couple weeks, the Sea Dogs have been posting creative with the "Next Wave" tagline attached to it. New font has also been utilized. 

Under Armour, Bauer to replace CCM

Every team in the Canadian Hockey League will have a new look next season.

The CHL confirmed Wednesday that Under Armour will become its "exclusive jersey and socks and exclusive training footwear and apparel partner." Bauer, meanwhile, "will serve as the official equipment supplier."

The new deals begin this coming season and run through 2030-31.

The companies replace long-time jersey and equipment provider CCM. The Saint John Sea Dogs, who entered the CHL in 2005, have only known CCM and Reebok (who owned CCM) as their jersey and equipment providers.

While the CHL didn't note any design changes, every team will no doubt have a different look next year – even if it's subtle. The CHL released a teaser video featuring the Rimouski Oceanic's new look, which noticeably features a different collar and back.

The last major jersey redesign in the CHL came before the 2009-10 season when every team made the switch to the Reebok Edge uniforms. The Sea Dogs are one of the few teams that have made very few changes to their look since that redesign.

On the jerseys, the CHL stated in its news release that "retail availability for fans, including new authentic and tiered replica jerseys, will be announced closer to the start of the 2025-26 campaign."

The new jerseys are not expected to be ready in time for the upcoming QMJHL Entry Draft.

Under Armour certainly isn't known as a hockey company but they do manufacture a number of college hockey jerseys. Bauer, of course, has been the long-time equipment provider for Hockey Canada's national teams.

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs played a pair of games in less than 24 hours – in two different provinces – this weekend.

The Sea Dogs played the Halifax Mooseheads on Saturday night at Scotiabank Centre, made the four hour drive home after the game and were then right back at it against the Moose on Sunday afternoon at TD Station.

The team won't have to worry about bus trips for a bit. Sunday's game was the first of five straight at TD Station.

BONNET HERE TO STAY

17-year-old defenseman Julien Bonnet is expected to remain with the Sea Dogs for the remainder of the season. He has been added to the team's online active roster.

Bonnet, a seventh-round pick of Saint John in the 2023 QMJHL Entry Draft, has already appeared in 13 games with Saint John this season. He's been held scoreless.

Bonnet joined the team on a few occasions this year as an injury replacement. He's been close to a regular in the club's lineup since early December.

The 6'02", 183 lbs defenseman has also played 11 games with the QJHL's Gatineau Flames this season, posting a goal and four assists in 11 games.

SAINT JOHN - It was country night at TD Station on Friday and the Saint John Sea Dogs were dressed the part.

The Sea Dogs debuted their first theme night jersey (and socks!) of the season, sporting a Canadian tuxedo inspired look for "Stampede at the Station" night. It's the first time the club has worn country themed sweaters.

The Sea Dogs are expected to wear a number of themed jerseys this season, something the club hasn't done too frequently. Besides Pink in the Rink, the Sea Dogs have only worn special jerseys on a few other occasions.

TD logo to be placed on Sea Dogs jerseys

The time has come: an ad has been placed on the Saint John Sea Dogs' home and away jerseys.

The Sea Dogs announced Wednesday that TD will be the team's first jersey sponsor. The arrangement is part of a larger deal involving an extension of the TD Station naming rights.

“TD is an exemplary partner who cares deeply about the region and its people,” said Trevor Georgie, president of the Sea Dogs and president and CEO of JSM Sports & Entertainment. “Their commitment to TD Station, the Sea Dogs, and the Region has been unwavering. They have consistently demonstrated, through action and investment, their drive to enrich the lives of those in the region. We are fortunate and honoured to continue this relationship.”

TD secured the naming rights to Harbour Station in 2019.

Teams from around the CHL have been announcing jersey ad deals over the past couple weeks. To make room for the ads, the CCM logo has been moved to the middle of the jersey.

In the NHL, TD currently has ads on the Vancouver Canucks jerseys.

The CHL began allowing teams to have ads on helmets in 2022. The Sea Dogs have had ProcedureFlow logos on their helmets the past two seasons.

The Sea Dogs begin the regular season on Friday night at TD Station, hosting the Moncton Wildcats at 7 p.m.

Pass/fail: the QMJHL's new logo

The Quebec Major Junior Hockey League kicked off draft week by unveiling a "new" logo.

Calling the logo "new" might be a stretch. As you can see above, the old logo, which the league has been using since the late 1990s, has just been freshened up a bit.

Here's the official explanation from the league:

The logo wasn’t entirely redesigned, but rather modernized while keeping the skate-shaped design as it is already one of the most influential sports brands in Canada. 

Modernizing the QMJHL trademark allows the league to rebalance the logo by spacing the letters, increasing its thickness and adjusting the angles. A skate line was also removed, reducing space between the boot and the blade. The result is a more compact and more vigorous crest.

The league had been discussing a new logo for several years. Today's announcement is perhaps a little disappointing for those looking for a much larger rebrand - a rebrand that would be more inclusive to Atlantic Canada.

So... is the QMJHL's new logo a pass or fail?

The QMJHL will hold a press conference tomorrow afternoon. Among the topics will be this new logo; this weekend's virtual QMJHL Entry Draft; and presumably an update on the league's return to play plan.
