GAME 1 NOT A SELLOUT

SAINT JOHN – A year ago, Game One of the President’s Cup final sold out in a matter of hours.

A year later, Game One of the President’s Cup didn’t sellout despite fans having six days to get ’em. That’s quite disappointing.

Sea Dogs president Wayne Long said this in a news release this past week:

“I’m picturing a sellout crowd and a sea of white for every game of the finals,” said Sea Dogs President Wayne Long. “We have had great support from our fans all year, now this is a chance to take it to the next level.”
Well, that fan support didn’t quite get to the next level. The crowd of 5,727 is well short of a complete sell-out (which includes standing room) of 6,488. In fact, the crowd wasn’t even the largest of the playoffs so far in Saint John.

Yes, it was a Thursday night. Yes, it was raining. Yes, Station St. is a nightmare right now. But this is the President’s Cup final, THE PRESIDENT’S CUP FINAL, where the No. 1 junior team in the country can smell a birth in the MasterCard Memorial Cup.

Anyone who reads this blog will know we’ve been critical of attendance in the past. Other than the home opening weekend, the crowds have been good this year. After three of the last four regular season home games sold out, it looked like that excitement might carry over into the playoffs. But after seven playoff games at Harbour Station, there has yet to be a packed house.

We just don’t get it. Game One should have been sold out.

But, hey, at least this isn’t Mississauga.

  1. Was sad to see... No excuses..Best team in the CHL for most of the season. Yes it was a Thursday night, but hey not even a school night, PD for teachers today. Was also disappointed in the level of intensity in the crowd, get off you hands people. Show these young men you are behind them. We need to be that 6th player..Saturday could be the last time they play at home this year..lets make it a white night..see you Saturday..

  2. Given it being Game 1 of the Prez Cup, why wait until Saturday to hand out the Playoff towels?? The focus should of been on the 1st game.

  3. Attendance is weak, hmmm. Have you ever tried to order tickets online? I have, without great results. I have tried to order lower bowl tickets during regular season, and no luck. So by chance the next day,I walk up to Box office and get great tickets. I almost did not bother to go to Box office as I figured it was sold out. Maybe something to look at in the future.
