SAINT JOHN – They lead 3-1 in the President’s Cup final, but the Saint John Sea Dogs aren’t looking ahead to the MasterCard Memorial Cup just yet.
“We’re not even thinking of Mississauga, we’re thinking about Gatineau on Friday night. That’s the big one,” Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant said to the Canadian Press after Wednesday’s 4-3 double overtime win in Gatineau. “They battled back from being down against two good teams, Drummondville and Quebec, so we know we’re far from done.”
The Memorial Cup begins a week from tonight in Mississauga, Ontario when the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League representative faces the host Majors.
A Sea Dogs victory tonight will give them nearly a week off to rest and prepare for the national championship. If the Gatineau Olympiques win, Game Six will be on Sunday at the Robert Guertin Centre. Game Seven, if needed, is Monday back at Harbour Station.
In the Ontario Hockey League final, the Owen Sound Attack have forced a Game Seven with the Majors following a Game Six win last night. The final game of the series is Sunday afternoon at the Hershey Centre.
With Mississauga hosting the event, both teams have automatically advanced to the Memorial Cup.
Out west, the Kootenay Ice lead the Portland Winterhawks 3-1. Game Five is later tonight in Portland.
In other Memorial Cup news, the Canadian Hockey League announced some time changes. Every match will now start at 8:00 pm AST with every second being broadcasted in high definition on Rogers Sportsnet.
