CHICOUTIMI, Que. - It was an ugly one on Friday night.
The Saint John Sea Dogs struggled to generate offence all night long in a 6-0 loss to the Chicoutimi Sagueneens at the Georges Vezina Centre. It was the first time this season that Saint John failed to score a goal in a game.
The Sea Dogs looked flat for a lot of the night and never really had much sustained offensive pressure. They fired 28 shots on net, but only eight were considered dangerous.
While this probably wasn't the worst Dogs game of the year, it wasn't a pretty one - and it's hard to hide the fact that they gave up six goals (all at even strength) to one of the league's worst offensive teams that traded away its top player yesterday.
With the Sea Dogs playing the second game of a three-in-three and backup Matt Williams injured, Stewart Bagnell made his QMJHL debut in net. Despite giving up six goals, Bagnell played well, especially in the first period. He made 30 stops in the loss.
Kevin Klima and Zachary Lavigne each scored twice for Chicoutimi while singles came from Liam Stevens and Vincent Milot-Ouellet. Alexis Shank made 28 saves for his second shutout of the season.
Chicoutimi opened the scoring at 12:54 of the first period. Jeremy Groleau fired a shot on net that produced a rebound, allowing Stevens to beat Bagnell with a quick shot in close.
Bagnell had a strong period, which included a few saves on a scramble not long after the Sags had opened the scoring. Besides that, it was a fairly uneventful period.
The Sags grabbed a 2-0 lead at 13:18 of the second when Kevin Klima executed a wraparound, slipping the puck in before Bagnell could slide across the crease.
At 15:30, the Sags crossed the line and Lavigne carried the puck to the circle where he fired a shot past Saint John goaltender, making it 3-0 Chicoutimi.
Then, at 17:13, Chicoutimi grabbed a 4-0 lead on a controversial goal. After Radim Salda clearly had the stick slashed out of his hands in the neutral zone, play continued and the Sags entered the offensive zone. Alexis Gaboury-Potvin ripped a shot off the post but Milot-Ouellet was in perfect position to put in the rebound.
Kevin Klima scored his second of the night at 12:49 of the third. Olivier Galipeau fired the original shot and Klima deposited the loose puck in front past Bagnell, making it 5-0.
Chicoutimi rounded out the scoring with 18 seconds remaining in regulation time. Lavigne netted his second of the game, firing a wrist shot high blocker side and in.
