SAINT JOHN - Daniel Hardie haunted his former team on Friday night.
Hardie scored twice and recorded seven shots in the Charlottetown Islanders' 5-2 victory over the Saint John Sea Dogs at Harbour Station. It was the first game for Hardie against his former club after being dealt to Charlottetown during the holiday trading period.
Hardie opened the scoring early in the first and set the tone for much of the game. The Isles led 3-0 after one and 5-0 midway through the second. While Saint John was able to keep the shots on goal total closer than the past few games and add two goals, this game never felt close.
Along with Hardie's pair, Thomas Casey, Sullivan Sparkes and Nikita Alexandrov scored for the Isles. Matthew Welsh made 21 stops in the win.
Ostap Safin and Luke Wilson scored for Saint John. Alex D'Orio was pulled after allowing four goals. Matthew Welsh came in in relief.
Hardie opened the scoring at 4:05 of the first period, taking a pass from Pascal Aquin and beating D'Orio with a quick shot in front of the crease.
Charlottetown doubled their lead at 5:26 when Casey fired a shot that fooled D'Orio. Then on a power play at 19:27, Sparkes scored to make it a 3-0 game after one period.
Saint John had another ugly start, not only going down 3-0 but also being outshot 17-4. The Isles nearly had a fourth goal, but Cedric Pare swiped the puck off the goal line.
In the second, Brett Budgell was near the top of circle and made a great pass down low to Alexandrov at 11:59, making it a 4-0 game. That would end D'Orio's night in net.
At 14:12, Hardie had plenty of time to wind up and fire a hard wrist shot over Williams' shoulder to make it 5-0 in favour of the visitors.
Saint John finally got on the board at 17:28. After Noah Massie blocked his original shot, Safin collected his own rebound and beat an out-of-position Welsh to make it a 5-1 match.
In the third, Wilson collected his own rebound at 10:27 and put it upstairs and over Welsh, making it 5-2. Robbie Burt thought he had scored later in the period, but the goal was taken away by a phenomenal Welsh glove save.
