SHERBROOKE, Que. - The Saint John Sea Dogs dropped the first game of a three-game Quebec road trip on Wednesday night.
Yaroslav Alexeyev netted a hat trick in the Sherbrooke Phoenix's 6-1 win over the Sea Dogs at the arena-with-a-really-name. Hugo Roy, Nicolas Roy and Thomas Gregoire added solo markers while Thommy Monette made 15 saves in the victory.
Ostap Safin scored Saint John's lone goal. Alex D'Orio made 40 saves in the loss.
Saint John has now lost nine straight road games. The team heads north to take on the Val-d'Or Foreurs and Rouyn-Noranda Huskies on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
The Sea Dogs once again struggled to consistently generate offence and were outshot 47-16 by the Phoenix. Saint John went 0/2 on the power play.
After a scoreless - and penalty free - first period, the Phoenix were awarded an early power play in the second. At 1:57, Mathieu Olivier sent a cross crease pass to Roy who scored, making it 1-0 Sherbrooke.
Safin tied the game at 1-1 at 6:00, ripping a wrist past the glove of Monette.
Late in the second at 16:05, Alexeyev snapped the puck past D'Orio after a scramble in the crease, giving Sherbrooke a 2-1 advantage after 40 minutes.
Roy scored at 1:25 of the third, firing a backhand shot past D'Orio. Just 1:04 later, Gregoire put in a rebound to give Sherbrooke a quick 4-1 lead.
The Phoenix quickly made it 5-1 when Alexeyev finished off a give-and-go at 4:37. That made it three goals in a 2:35 span for Sherbrooke.
Alexeyev completed the hat trick with a power play goal at 9:46, making it a 6-1 final.

The Sea Dogs were without forwards Cedric Pare (upper body), Cole Reginato (lower body), Matt Green (upper body), Landon Quinney (upper body) and Nicholas Deakin-Poot (upper body); and defenceman Brendan O’Reilly (lower body).
According to Tim Roszell, Pare will miss the entire road trip with an upper body injury.
The Sea Dogs announced before the game that defenceman Zachary Leclerc has been called up from Quebec AAA for this three-game road trip. This was his third career QMJHL game. He played as a forward due to the Sea Dogs' desperate need for bodies up front.
The Dogs also announced Wednesday that goaltender Tommy DaSilva, who started Saturday's game against Shawinigan, has been reassigned back to Quebec AAA.
