Memorial Cup events begin Saturday

SAINT JOHN
- The games are still a few days away, but if you've been uptown lately, the 2022 Memorial Cup has already taken over the city.

Signs are banners are just about everywhere as the city prepares to host the first Memorial Cup since 2019.

The Saint John Sea Dogs and Memorial Cup Host Organizing Committee held a press conference on Tuesday at Market Square, officially unveiling many event details. Sea Dogs president and general manager Trevor Georgie and committee chair Marc-Anthony Ashfield spoke for nearly 40 minutes, highlighting the festivities that will take over the uptown area beginning this weekend.

Among the topics discussed were the event schedule; Saint John's military themed jerseys (which will be unveiled Sunday); some of the in-game entertainment; Sea Dogs alumni that will be in town; and, surprisingly, escalators.

The point of the press conference was to get some press attention, and the event certainly did that.

  • There's something for everyone at this year's tournament, reports CTV Atlantic.
  • Organizers are hoping the Memorial Cup takes over the city, reports CTV Atlantic.
  • Global News reports on what to expect both on and off the ice at the Memorial Cup.
  • CBC New Brunswick writes about the Sea Dogs' second chance at a championship this season. "The last few weeks have been tremendous. The team's got a renewed sense of confidence, renewed energy. They're working tremendously hard. They're working probably the hardest I've ever seen them work," said Georgie.

And last but not least, a little hype from Maestro Fresh Wes.
Things officially get rolling on Saturday with the opening of the new ball hockey court (beside the skatepark in the TD Station parking lot); Youth Day in the One For All District; the Port City Party at the Area 506 Container Village featuring the Strumbellas; and fireworks.

Full event details can be found on the Memorial Cup website.
