Notebook: Stairs, Isles set for major Game 3

CHARLOTTETOWN
- For a few minutes, Dawson Stairs had scored one of the biggest goals in Charlottetown Islanders history.

The former Saint John Sea Dogs forward scored with 1:17 remaining in the third period to put the Islanders up 3-2 over the Shawinigan Cataractes in Game 2 of the President Cup final Sunday. The Cataractes would tie the game on a controversial power play and then win in it overtime, cancelling out a lot of the impact of Stairs' goal.
The Fredericton native was named the game's third star. Stairs now has two goals and seven assists in 12 playoff games this year.

The Islanders will need Stairs and all of the team's offensive players to be at their best in Wednesday's pivotal Game 3 in Shawinigan. Despite posting 38 shots in Game 2, Charlottetown's offense has struggled to create quality scoring chances against a well structured and committed Shawinigan group.

The Cataractes lead the best-of-seven President Cup final 2-0. The winner of the series advances to the 2022 Memorial Cup in Saint John.

NEW STORE

The Sea Dogs will be one of the vendors at the waterfront space, opening a new Sea Dogs Styles location.

The Container Village will also play a major role at the 2022 Memorial Cup, hosting the Bash on the Bay concert series.

NEW SAGS LOGO
The Chicoutimi Sagueneens have one of the most iconic looks in junior hockey. Next season, they'll be sporting a new logo.
The team has also unveiled their new jerseys.

OTHER THINGS
  • The Windsor Spitfires lead the OHL final 2-1 following a 6-3 win over the Hamilton Bulldogs on Monday. Hamilton hadn't lost a game in these playoffs until this series. Game 4 isn't until Friday night due to graduation ceremonies booking up Windsor's WFCU Centre.
  • The Telegraph-Journal (paywall) reports that the City of Saint John will contribute a $150,000 operating grant to the Memorial Cup Host Organizing Committee. The HOC had requested a $400,000 grant, reports the T-J, but the city believes $150,000 is more appropriate for a market of this size. The city is also providing $100,000 of in-kind support related to dehumidifiers.
  • CTV Atlantic takes a look at Saint John's Memorial Cup preparations.
  • The Acadie-Bathurst Titan have named head coach Jason Clarke the team's new general manager. The team named Clarke to the dual role - and signed him to a two-year contract - on Tuesday. Clarke, the long-time owner, GM and head coach of the Carleton Place Canadiens, joined the Titan in November.
  • The Athletic (paywall) has a nice story on former Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant, who is a series win away from returning to the Stanley Cup final.
  • Spencer Smallman and the Chicago Wolves now lead the AHL's Western Conference final 2-0 over the Stockton Heat. The Wolves defeated the Heat 3-2 in Game 2 on Monday.
