SaintJohnSeaDogs.com’s recap. Their three-game Quebec road swing came to an end as the Saint John Sea Dogs fell short against the Sherbrooke Phoenix 3-0 in Sunday’s Quebec Major Junior Hockey League action.

HockeyPhoenix.ca’s recap. The Phoenix have a nice website.

SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without Jonathan Huberdeau (Florida Panthers – NHL camp), Matthew Highmore (death in family), Jurij Repe (broken hand), David Weckworth (lower body), and Connor Donaghey (upper body) on Sunday.

THE START: After giving up four goals in Friday’s first period and three Saturday, the Sea Dogs had a better performance on Sunday. Saint John and Sherbrooke skated to a 0-0 tie after one and it was a fairly evenly played first. Shots were 13-10 in favour of the home team.

DICKINSON: Justin Dickinson got a misconduct for unsportsmanlike behaviour along with a minor penalty for roughing at 14:25 of the first. It was later changed to an abuse of officials misconduct, according to the league website. He slammed the door as he headed down the runway to the Sea Dogs dressing room.

THE MIDDLE: Saint John couldn’t get much going offensively in the second period. Sherbrooke, who entered the game averaging under 26 shots per game, out shot Saint John 18-6 in the middle frame. Vincent Deslauriers scored to give the Phoenix a 1-0 lead.

COMTOIS: Alexandre Comtois had a good game, recording two goals in the third period. He now has 15 in 43 games this season.

HISTORY: This was the first shutout in Phoenix history. Jacob Gervais-Chouinard made 23 saves in the win. A movie is probably already in the works.

HADE: Benjamin Hade, traded by Saint John to Sherbrooke earlier this week, played his first game against his former team on Sunday. He had two shots and a hit in the game.

ROAD TRIP: Well, this was not a fun road trip for the Sea Dogs. They head home with a 0-3-0-0 record following loses in Rimouski, Victoriaville, and Sherbrooke. They were outscored 18-5.

VS PHOENIX: The loss dropped the Sea Dogs to 1-1-0-0 against the expansion Phoenix this year. The Phoenix visit Saint John on January 26.

STANDINGS: Saint John remains fifth in the Telus Maritimes Division and 15th overall in the league with an 18-24-0-0 record. They are six points ahead of the Phoenix in the overall standings and three points back of the Gatineau Olympiques but have played one fewer game than both of those teams.

NOTES: Sea Dogs head coach and GM Mike Kelly was away scouting. Assistant coach Ross Yates ran the bench… Steve Duda and Ian Saab were each a -2… Maxime Villemaire had six shots… Denis Kamaev was a +2… Michael McNamee had six shots… lots of hits in this game. Hits were 22-17 in favour of Sherbrooke.
