SaintJohnSeaDogs.com’s recap. In Saturday’s Quebec Major
Junior Hockey League action, the Saint John Sea Dogs dropped a 6-4 decision to
the Victoriaville Tigres in game two of their road swing.
SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without Matthew Highmore
(death in family), Jonathan Huberdeau (Florida Panthers camp), Jurij Repe
(broken hand), David Weckworth (lower body), and Marcus Cuomo (healthy) on
Saturday.
Olivier LeBlanc (wrist) was a game time decision but did
play.
BAD START: Much like Friday night, the Sea Dogs had a bad
first period. On Friday in Rimouski, Saint John was out shot 14-3 and down 4-0
after one. On Saturday in Victoriaville, they were out shot 16-4 and down 3-0.
It wasn’t pretty.
This season, Saint John has been outscored 54-31 in first
periods and out shot 469-328.
REBOUNDING: The second period was a good comeback period
by Saint John. They were basically dominated in the first period but in the
second, thanks to some power plays, they scored three times and were out shot
just 14-12. Not bad.
VILLEMAIRE: In the second period, Maxime Villemaire
scored his first goal in the QMJHL since February 28 of last year. He added
another one late in the frame to make it a one-goal game with 20 minutes to
play. He now has two goals and nine penalty minutes since rejoining the Dogs.
ANDERSON: Stephen Anderson recorded two assists yesterday
giving him 11 points in 38 games this season. He also went a solid 12/18 on
faceoffs.
FOURNIER: Alex Fournier started in net for Saint John for
the first time since December 16 in PEI. He entered the game with a 7.07 goals
against average and a 0.809 save percentage. He got off to a bad start on Saturday
but seemed to settle in after the first. He made 35 saves but still could not
pick up his first QMJHL win. He is now 0-6 with a 6.77 GAA and 0.819 SV%.
STANDINGS: Yesterday’s loss dropped the Sea Dogs to
18-23-0-0 on the season. They are fifth in the Telus Maritimes Division and 15th
overall in the QMJHL. The Dogs have lost three straight and are 3-7-0-0 in
their last 10.
NOTES: The Sea Dogs and Tigres play each other again on January 30
in Victoriaville and March 1 in Saint John… Sea Dogs head coach and GM Mike Kelly was away
scouting once again. Assistant coach Ross Yates ran the bench… Maxime
Villemaire had six shots… Philippe Maillet had three assists… William Cochrane
and Philippe Halley each had seven shots… Saint John out hit Victoriaville 10-5.
