SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs announced today that
they will be taking a unique approach regarding captaincy this season.
Under the plan, the team will not name a captain.
Instead, forwards Jason Cameron and Oliver Cooper, along with defenseman David
Weckworth, have been named the first alternate captains of the season.
Head Coach and General Manager Mike Kelly said the three
players will start the season wearing 'A's. The letters will be passed to other
players monthly.
"With a younger team, we want to make sure we give
our players the opportunity to contribute and allow leadership qualities to
emerge," Kelly said in a team release. "This is a close room. We have
older players who can provide leadership, but we feel like this is a way to
allow leadership qualities to develop long-term."
The first players chosen to wear an ‘A’ come as no
surprise. Cameron, 20, is the only player remaining from Saint John’s 2011
Memorial Cup championship season while Cooper and Weckworth each have played a few
seasons in the league already.
Jonathan Huberdeau and Pierre Durepos, each of whom are
no longer in the league, each wore the ‘C’ for the Sea Dogs last season.
