The Sea Dogs selected Tessier with the 15th
overall pick in today’s Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Entry Draft. It was
Saint John’s second pick of the first round after selecting defenseman Luke
Green first overall earlier in the day.
Tessier is a 16-year old centre who played in the Quebec
Midget AAA ranks last season. In 38 regular season games he scored seven goals
and 14 assists with the Trois-Rivieres Estacades and another four goals and
five assists in five playoff games.
At the Gatorade Excellence Challenge, Tessier registered
an assist in five games with Team Quebec White.
“He’s a player who likes to control the puck and lead the
rush,” writes HockeyProspect.com in their draft guide. “His skating abilities help him create room on the
ice. He also has improved his play in his zone this season. He has better
positioning and makes better reads in the defensive zone now. He’s also better
now in his one-on-one battles, with and without the puck.”
HockeyProspect.com ranked him as the 19th best
player available while QMJHL Central Scouting placed him 24th.
Saint John’s next pick is in the second round, 22nd
overall.
