Recap: Sea Dogs lose 5-2

SYDNEY, NS - Special teams once again proved key as the Saint John Sea Dogs lost a third straight game on Saturday.

The Cape Breton Eagles went 1/4 on the power play and added a shorthanded goal in a 5-2 victory over the Sea Dogs at Centre 200. Saint John went 0/5 on the man advantage. 

The game never felt in doubt for Cape Breton, who scored twice in the first period and led 4-1 midway through the third. Shots in the game ended 48-21 in favour of the Eagles with Patrick Leaver having a busy night in the Saint John crease.

Olivier Houde had two goals and an assist to lead the Eagles while Cam MacDonald, Jacob Squires and Jacob Newcombe each had a goal and an assist. Jakub Milota made 19 saves in the win.

The Eagles, who were buyers at the deadline, have now won four straight as they try and move up the standings.

Saint John goals came from Brody Fournier and Coen Miller. Miller, who scored on a penalty shot late in the third period, had a goal and an assist in the game.

SCRATCHES: The Sea Dogs were without forwards Benjamin Beaudry (healthy), Luke Benoit (healthy) and Reid Calder (healthy) along with defenseman Jeremie Richard (healthy).

NOTES: The Sea Dogs went with 11 forwards and seven defensemen... Matteo Mann returned to the lineup after missing Thursday's game with an injury... head coach Travis Crickard is away with Team Canada at the Youth Winter Olympics. Jeff Hansen was listed as the head coach for this game... the Sea Dogs wore their black third jerseys... Cape Breton's Jacob Newcombe scored his first goal of the season. He made his season debut on Thursday after winning his fight with cancer... Eriks Mateiko had four shots... the Sea Dogs had a better performance in the faceoff circle with faceoffs ending 35-30 in favour of Cape Breton... Coen Miller scored Saint John's first penalty shot goal of the season... the Sea Dogs have allowed a shorthanded goal in three straight games... attendance was 2,686.
