Sunday stuff: Reynolds, Elie score first goals with new teams

At long last, Peter Reynolds scored his first goal as a member of the Halifax Mooseheads on Sunday.

The former Saint John Sea Dogs captain scored in Halifax's 4-3 overtime victory over the Moncton Wildcats at Avenir Centre.
The 21-year-old, who now has 21 goals on the season, has a goal and four assists in six games with the Mooseheads. 

Halifax has been struggling of late — which includes a 3-2 home loss to the rebuilding Quebec Remparts on Saturday — but should get steadily better as their new acquisitions and world junior players begin to mesh with the team's existing roster.

Sunday's win over the Wildcats keeps the Mooseheads in top spot in the Maritimes Division. This could be a fun race down the stretch.

Former Sea Dogs forward Vince Elie, meanwhile, scored his first goal as a member of the Shawinigan Cataractes on Friday.
Elie has a goal and an assist in three games with the Cataractes.

A few other Sunday evening notes...

  • The 17th-place Gatineau Olympiques have been on quite a run since the calendar flipped — and Mathis Gauthier has been a big part of that. The former Sea Dogs defenseman now has an impressive two goals and eight assists in just five games with Gatineau. The Olympiques have won five straight games.
  • One player noticably absent from the Victoriaville Tigres lineup on Saturday in Saint John was Anaheim Ducks prospect Tristan Luneau who, as Le Soleil reports, continues to recover from an illness that kept him out of the world juniors.
  • Saturday was an interesting day in the QMJHL with the Sea Dogs upsetting the Tigres, the Remparts upsetting the Mooseheads in Halifax and the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies shutting out the Baie-Comeau Drakkar 4-0 at the Henry Leonard Centre. The Drakkar fell to 17-1-2-0 on home ice with that loss.
  • Sportsnet has a story on Joshua Roy's NHL debut, which came on Saturday night against Edmonton Oilers.
  • Team Red and Team White rosters have been announced for the CHL/NHL Top Prospects Game, which takes place Jan. 24 in Moncton.
  • Quite a lacrosse game between the Halifax Thunderbirds and Toronto Rock on Friday in Halifax. Can't find video of it, but Dawson Theede had a fight in the opening minutes of the game.
  • The UNB Reds improved to 22-0 on the season with weekend wins at Saint Mary's and Acadia.
  • William Dufour had a three-game goal scoring streak going before the Bridgeport Islanders were shutout 2-0 by the Providence Bruins on Sunday.
  • If you caught Friday's Belleville Senators/Toronto Marlies game on TSN, you saw an eventful night for a couple former Sea Dogs. William Villeneuve registered four assists in Toronto's 8-0 win while Boko Imama has been suspended three games for this incident.
