The Saint John Sea Dogs have called up prospect Jason Gallant from the Summerside Western Capitals of the Maritime Junior “A” Hockey League. The announcement came this afternoon on the Sea Dogs’ Twitter page, saying that Gallant will be in the lineup tonight in Charlottetown against the Rocket.
In 30 games this season, the Detroit native has five goals and four assists as a left winger with the Capitals. He has 12 penalty minutes.
Gallant was added to the Sea Dogs' 50-man roster on January 6 as part of some roster moves by the team. He plays on the same team as frequent Saint John call-up Will Johnston.
The call-up comes after captain and forward Mike Thomas was suspended for six games on Tuesday after a hit that happened last Friday at Harbour Station. Aiden Kelly has been filling his spot in the lineup, but appears he will be scratched tonight pending some unknowns.
The only other spare is defenseman Gabriel Bourret, who has played in the last two games due to Yann Sauve departing the team after a death in his family. Sauve is expected to return tonight however.
Last season with Summerside, Gallant played in 35 games and had six goals and 13 assists. The year prior in his rookie season, he had seven goals and seven assists in 43 games.
According to the Telegraph-Journal today, Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant was at the Western Capitals' playoff game last night at Credit Union Place. Gallant, a PEI native, and his club are coming off a 4-3 shootout loss in Cape Breton on Wednesday.
Also reported on the Sea Dogs’ Twitter page is the fact that he will wear number 26 tonight. The last player to wear the number was Nicholas Petersen, who wore it to start the year before switching to number eight. Josh Schram, Kyle Paige, Jeff McNeil, and Alexandre Monahan have also wore the digits on their sweater.
Evan Mosher will start for the Rocket tonight while Marco Cousineau returns to the Saint John crease. Game time is 7:00 pm at the Charlottetown Civic Centre.
