WHAT THEY SAID...

It certainly was an interesting night watching the Sea Dogs and Wildcats go at it on Rogers Sportsnet. There were some mistakes, some good camera work, and way, way too much laughter by Rob Faulds and Sam Cosentino.

We’ve decided to sum up what happened and our thoughts in point form below. These are no certain order:
  • We were surprised by how little they focused on Brandon Gormley and Kirill Kabanov.
  • The Saulnier twins were called the “east coast Sedins.” They also made some kind of joke about the brothers and the airport. Laughter ensued.
  • The fact that there were 12 NHL drafted players on the ice and five potential draft picks in this year’s draft was not mentioned much.
  • Mike Hoffman was the center of attention all night. He was interviewed during the first intermission.
  • David Savard of the Wildcats was interviewed in the second intermission.
  • The pre-game was about four minutes long. The post-game was wrapped up in 30 seconds. Classic Sportsnet.
  • Jonathan Huberdeau took a shot in the mouth, forcing Rob Faulds to say “he got hit in the ‘deau.’”
  • There seemed to be some confusion about the Rivalry Cup format early on but it was sorted out. Sportsnet also said a couple of times that Saint John had 52 wins they have 53.
  • Nicolas Deschamps and his search for the point scoring title was a big part of the broadcast.
  • Jim Lang, who has to drink about five energy drinks and three coffees’s before coming on-air, did the intermission scoreboard.
  • Sportsnet had a great shot of the Marek Hrivik goal going in, clearly showing it hit Pierre Durepos’ stick.
  • The two in the broadcast booth seemed quite certain that a huge brawl was going to the end the game after the Scott Trask elbow on Aiden Kelly.
  • Unlike the Mike Thomas suspension, there will be lots of camera angles for the league to look at on the Trask hit.
  • Several Moncton fans on Twitter were upset by how little Sportsnet spotlighted the Wildcats with the game being in their city. The two teams were both given their fair share of attention though. Plus, shouldn’t Wildcat fans be at the game?

Rogers Sportsnet will broadcast one QMJHL playoff game this year. No date has been announced.
