MAYER COULD GET BENCH DUTY

According to the Montreal Gazette, former Sea Dogs goaltender Robert Mayer could make his National Hockey League debut, on the bench, Tuesday in Boston against the Bruins.

“The only player still missing at practice was goaltender Jaroslav Halak and there was some question as to whether he would join the Canadiens for practice Monday, go directly to Boston or possibly avoid two coast-to-coast trips by flying south to California,” wrote Pat Hickey of the Gazette.

“The Canadiens are in San Jose on Thursday and then play Saturday in Los Angeles and Sunday in Anaheim. If the Canadiens opt for the last option, Carey Price would start in Boston and Robert Mayer would serve as the backup. He was called up from Cincinnati of the ECHL last week to give the team an extra goaltender in practice.”

Mayer being in the line-up is in doubt at the moment however as it appears that Jaroslav Halak will be at the game in Boston in time to serve as the backup, or possibly even the starter, for the Canadiens.

This season with the Canadiens/Nashville Predators affiliate, Mayer has 16-7-1 record with a 2.68 goals against average to go along with a save percentage of 0.895. He has been called up to the American Hockey League’s Hamilton Bulldogs several times this year to fill in for a injured net minder. He never saw any game time however.
