VICTORIAVILLE, Que. – The Saint John Sea Dogs traded up to grab a local kid at the 2011 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Entry Draft.
The Sea Dogs traded their 36th and 72nd overall picks in this year’s draft along with their second round pick in next year’s draft in exchange for the 19th overall selection in this year’s draft. With the first pick in the second round, Saint John drafted forward Oliver Cooper.
The 16-year old played ‘AAA’ hockey with the Fredericton Canadiens last season. In 33 regular season games he recorded 11 goals and 13 assists to go along with 52 penalty minutes. In 10 post-season games he added a goal and 12 assists.
Cooper will add some size to Sea Dogs training camp this fall as he is listed at 6’02 and 189lb.
QMJHL Central Scouting had him ranked 17th overall.
He was the second Fredericton Canadiens player to go early in the draft as the Val-d’Or Foreurs selected Matt Murphy 5th overall.
Here is some video evidence that he can indeed score goals.
