24 hours later and there has still been no announcement on the format for the Lewiston Maineaics’ dispersal draft.
Yesterday, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League bought the troubled hockey club and announced that the team would be dissolved through a special draft featuring the remaining 17 teams.
Metro Montreal reports that, even a full day later, there has still been no agreement on how the draft will work.
Metro Q Files reports that the format is expected to be a snake draft. The Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, who finished last overall in the standings last year, would pick first followed by the Baie-Comeau Drakkar, the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, and so on.
That format would mean Saint John would pick 17th overall given their top finish in the standings. The Dogs would also have the 18th overall pick because the order would flip in the second round.
The dispersal draft is expected to be held on Friday followed by the Entry Draft on Saturday.
Meanwhile, the aftermath of the announcement has been quite interesting.
The Maine Hockey Journal reports that the Maineiacs’ coaching staff found out their services would no longer be needed in Lewiston at the same time as the fans and media did.
The saddest part of these events has been reading the player's reactions on Twitter. They have been left out in the cold for the most part - and that's not good. With players like Nathan MacKinnon and other high end prospects on the fence about playing in the QMJHL next year, this isn’t the image the league needs right now.
