POSTSCRIPT: Wildcats 0, Sea Dogs 1

A collection of recaps from last night’s 1-0 Saint John Sea Dogs win over the Moncton Wildcats…

Our recap. Roman Will was the story of this one. The Wildcats ‘tender made several terrific stops throughout the game to give his team a chance. The late-game goal had to be heartbreaking.

News 88.9’s recap. Featuring Tim Roszell’s goal call.

SaintJohnSeaDogs.com’s recap. The Saint John Sea Dogs waited until the eleventh hour but finally came away with a 1-0 win over the Moncton Wildcats Thursday.

SN Live Blog Replay. The guy running the ice cream stand had a Jonathan Huberdeau Team Canada jersey on. Unreal.

MISSING IN ACTION: The Sea Dogs were without forwards Stanislav Galiev (wrist), Devon Oliver-Dares (head), and Maxime Villemaire (gone home).

WELCOME BACK: Forward Ryan Tesink returned to the Sea Dogs lineup on Thursday night. It was his first game action since November 26 due to a knee injury. His return was short lived as he was given a game misconduct for “abuse of officials” at 18:06 of the first period. He also picked up roughing and unsportsmanlike penalties on the same play that took place during a scrum in the corner. Some strange stuff.

WILL: What can you say about Roman Will? The guy was simply Evan Mosher-like, making 45 saves in the loss. It was an unfortunate finish for him as his team couldn’t even earn a point out of the game.

JURCO: Big time goal from Tomas Jurco with 8.5 seconds left in the game. It was his 24th of the season and fourth game-winner.

STREAK: The win extended Saint John’s winning streak to four games. The Dogs have outscored opponents 16-5 over that span. They are now 7-2-0-1 in their last 10 games.

COYLE: For the first time in his QMJHL career, Charlie Coyle did not score a goal in a game. The Sea Dogs forward saw his four-game goal scoring streak come to an end on Thursday night. He is still averaging a goal per game though with five in five matches. Coyle finished last night’s contest with three shots and two hits.

STRANGE PENALTIES: There were a lot of strange penalties last night. Along with Tesink's “abuse of officials” game misconduct, there were two delay of game calls, two unsportsmanlike penalties, and a diving infraction.

SHOTS: Saint John held a large shots-on-goal edge throughout the game. They finished the contest with a 46-20 advantage. After two periods, the Sea Dogs led 34-9.

VS MONCTON: The Sea Dogs improved to 4-2-0-0 against the Wildcats this season while Moncton fell to 2-2-1-1 against Saint John. The Dogs have won the last two head-to-head meetings.

LOW SCORING: Are these low scoring games become the norm when Saint John and Moncton meet? Their last meeting was also a close one as the Dogs beat the ‘Cats 2-1 in a shootout. Both regulation time goals in that match came in the third period.

CORBEIL: Mathieu Corbeil deserves some credit for this win. He had to be sharp, facing just nine shots through two periods. The goaltender made a few great stops – including a big one in the third period – to get the shutout win.

It was Corbeil’s fifth shutout of the season which is a team record. He also picked up his 27th win of the campaign which ties Jacob DeSerres’ team record.

NOTES: THE Todd Veinotte from “The Todd Veinotte Show” did colour commentary with Tim Roszell on News 88.9 last night. He was quite critical at times, but it was refreshing to listen to… Danick Gauthier had a Saint John high eight shots on goal. Tomas Jurco had seven and Nathan Beaulieu six… Charles Roussel had five hits… Marek Hrivik and Devon MacAusland had four shots for the Wildcats… neither team could connect on the power play. Saint John went 0/5 and Moncton 0/6… the Sea Dogs play Moncton two more times this season. Their next meeting is on Saturday, February 25 in Moncton.
