Sea Dogs At AHL Camps Update

HOUSTON AEROS
Houston Aeros training camp began last week at the Xcel Energy Centre in Minnesota before moving to Texas. Former Sea Dogs Charlie Coyle, Zack Phillips, and Nick Petersen are all taking part in the camp.

Two scrimmages were held at the Minnesota Wild’s home rink over the weekend. Coyle and Phillips played on Team Green while Petersen was on Team Red.

Team Green would win both games with Phillips and Coyle each having an impact. The Wild website has a recap of Sunday’s scrimmage and also has video highlights.

Saturday scrimmage highlights can also be found on the Wild website.

Hockey Wilderness has some thoughts on the weekend scrimmages which include analysis on both Coyle and Phillips. The Wild website has “Five Takeaways” from the first few days of camp.

Houston plays their first pre-season game tonight against the Texas Stars.

TEXAS STARS
Speaking of the Stars, former Sea Dog Scott Howes is currently taking part in their training camp. We forgot to include him in our master list of Sea Dogs at AHL camps last week.

Howes played 49 games with the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers and six games with the ECHL’s Alaska Aces last season.

Here’s some thrilling video from a Stars scrimmage.

CHICAGO WOLVES
The Chicago Wolves opened the AHL pre-season on Monday night in Peoria against the Rivermen. Former Sea Dogs goaltender Mathieu Corbeil played the second half of the game for the Wolves, a match they would end up losing 2-1. Corbeil stopped all 11 shots he faced in the game and four of the six shootout attempts.

“Chicago held a 1-0 advantage after four rounds in the shootout as right wing Kellan Tochkin scored for the Wolves, but Peoria’s Anthony Peluso and Brett Sonne were able to get the final two attempts past Mathieu Corbeil to seal the win for the Rivermen,” states the Wolves website.

The Wolves are back in action tonight against the Rockford Ice Hogs.

PORTLAND PIRATES
Another player we forgot to include on our Sea Dogs at AHL camps list was Maxime Villemaire who is at Portland Pirates training camp.

The Pirates takes on Travis Fullerton’s University of New Brunswick Varsity Reds tomorrow afternoon in exhibition action.
