Three former Saint John Sea Dogs are involved in the launch of the 3 on 3 Pro Hockey League.
Former Dogs Shea Kewin (Guelph Brewers), Scott Howes (Toronto Bees) and Anthony Bergin (Toronto Bees) are all listed on team rosters posted on the league's website. The rosters are much smaller than typical hockey ones, consisting of a minimum of eight players and a maximum of 10.
According to league website, "the 3HL Tour is a series 3 on 3 Pro Hockey Tournaments held in cities across Canada where 3HL Teams compete in an eight or 16 team single elimination bracket style tournament similar to March Madness with a single winner with individual tournament results contributing to the overall league standings, resulting in the top eight teams competing for the Champions Cup a the end of the season."
Eight teams - all in southern Ontario - will be competing this season.
There are a number of notable names playing in the 3HL. The league has eligibility requirements, welcoming players who played some level of major junior or professional hockey.
The league is holding a pre-season tournament this Sunday in Markham. The first official tournament, the 3HL New Years Day Classic, takes place Jan. 1 at Ryerson University's Mattamy Athletic Centre.
Eight tournaments will be held between Jan. 1 and April 22. That includes stops at OHL arenas in Oshawa, Guelph, London and Kitchener. The 3HL Champions Cup will take place May 6 in Oshawa.
