Jurco On Slovakia's Preliminary Roster

According to NHL.com, Saint John Sea Dogs forward Tomas Jurco has been named to Slovakia’s preliminary roster for the World Junior Hockey Championships. It’s no surprise to see Jurco on the list. He is one of just six returning players for the Slovaks.

“Slovakia's camp will take place in Three Hills, Alta., beginning Dec. 17,” writes Mike Morreale on NHL.com. “The club has a pair of tune-up games prior to the start of the tournament on Dec. 26 in Calgary. The Slovaks will meet Finland on Dec. 21 in Winsport and the U.S. National Team on Dec. 23 in Three Hills. Slovakia, which finished a disappointing eighth at the 2011 WJC in Buffalo, will compete in Group A with Russia, Sweden, Switzerland and Latvia. Group B consists of Canada, Team USA, Finland, Czech Republic and Denmark.”

Jurco had a single goal in six games at last year’s tournament.

The Detroit Red Wings prospect has been having a solid season in Saint John, recording 19 goals and 21 assists in 28 games. He had 56 total points in 60 games last year.

Zack Phillips and Nathan Beaulieu are both leaving for Calgary on Saturday morning to attend Team Canada’s world junior selection camp. According to often unreliable Damien Cox of the Toronto Star, Jonathan Huberdeau, who has meet out a month with a broken foot, will report tomorrow as well.
