FINAL: Saint John 2, Halifax 3
DARTMOUTH, NS – The Saint John Sea Dogs dug themselves
into a hole that they couldn’t quite climb out of on Saturday night.
Playing in the cozy confines of the Dartmouth Sportsplex,
the Sea Dogs couldn’t contain the Halifax Mooseheads, allowing them to jump out
to a 3-0 lead at the midway mark of the contest. Saint John would battle back
but couldn’t quite complete the comeback.
The Sea Dogs’ offense couldn’t generate many
solid-scoring opportunities in this game. Of their 17 shots, only nine were
considered dangerous shots. Also, many of the players who will be relied on
this season to supply offense did not play in this contest.
It was also a physical contest, much like Friday’s match
against Cape Breton. There were a few fights and a number of big
hits/collisions.
Brett Crossley, Brandon Vuic, and Jacob Jacques scored
both Mooseheads goals in their pre-season opening win. Kevin Resop made eight
saves while Kevin Martin made seven.
Stefano Pezzetta continued his scoring pace, netting both
Saint John goals. Tommy Viboux allowed three goals on 22 shots while
Christopher Smith made 13.
At 10:55 on a power play, Vuic grabbed a rebound in front
of the net and potted the puck to make it 2-0 Moose.
Shots in the first were 15-5 in favour of Halifax.
Halifax made it 3-0 at 6:58 of the second. A low shot
from below the dot got past Viboux to extend the home team’s advantage.
At 18:52, Saint John got on the board as Pezzetta scored
to make it 3-1. Shots in the second were 10-6 Moose.
Late in the third at 13:07, Pezzetta scored another –
this one a strange one – to make it a 3-2 contest. The Dogs had a couple of
good chances late and pulled their goaltender but could not net an equalizer.
Shots in the third were 10-6 Moose.
Saint John went 0-for-3 on the power play while Halifax
went 1-for-5.
