The Saint John Sea Dogs were big winners at the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League's Golden Puck Awards, which were held Wednesday evening in Quebec City.
Thomas Chabot won the Émile "Butch" Bouchard Trophy as the QMJHL's Defenceman of the Year and the Paul-Dumont Trophy as the league's Personality of the Year.

Chabot is the second Sea Dog to win the Defenceman of the Year honour, joining Simon Despres who won in 2011. Jonathan Huberdeau won the Personality of the Year award in 2012.
The 20-year-old (although is junior hockey age is 19) Chabot is very likely in his final year with the Sea Dogs. He posted 10 goals and 45 points in 34 regular season games with Saint John and added another three goals and 10 points in the first round of the playoffs.
Sea Dogs head coach Danny Flynn also picked up an award Wednesday, winning the Ron-Lapointe Trophy as QMJHL Coach of the Year. Flynn previously won the award with the Moncton Wildcats in 2009.
This is the third time a Sea Dogs coach has won the award. Gerard Gallant won in 2010 and 2011.
Both Chabot and Flynn are now nominated for CHL awards in their respective categories. The national awards will be handed out during Memorial Cup week in Windsor.
UPDATE: Chabot was also named to the QMJHL's first all-star team. Simon Bourque and Mathieu Joseph made the second team.
Quispamsis native Anderson MacDonald of the Sherbrooke Phoenix was named to the all-rookie team.
Two members of the Saint John Sea Dogs have been nominated for QMJHL awards.
Thomas Chabot has been nominated for the Émile "Butch" Bouchard Trophy, which is awarded annually to the league's top defenceman.
Chabot, who started the year with the Ottawa Senators, recorded 10 goals and 45 points in 34 games with Saint John. He missed the start of the year while with the Sens and another month while playing with Team Canada at the world juniors.
Guillaume Brisebois of the Charlottetown Islanders and Samuel Girard of the Shawinigan Cataractes have also been nominated. Girard led all QMJHL skaters in assists this season with 66 in 59 games.
The last Sea Dog to win the top defenceman award was Simon Despres in 2011.
Behind the bench, Danny Flynn has been nominated for the Ron-Lapointe Trophy, which is awarded annually to the league's top coach.
Gilles Bouchard of the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies and Joël Bouchard of the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada are the other nominees. Interestingly, Gilles Bouchard won the award last season while Joël Bouchard won the previous year.
Flynn previously won the award in 2009 while with the Moncton Wildcats. Gerard Gallant was the last Sea Dogs head coach to win the honour, claiming the trophy in 2010 and 2011.
The Golden Puck Awards will be held April 5 in Quebec City. The full list of nominees can be found here.
For the first time, the Saint John Mill
Rats and Saint John Sea Dogs will play in the building on the same day. The
Mill Rats take on the Halifax Hurricanes at 2 p.m. while the Sea Dogs host the
Cape Breton Screaming Eagles at 8 p.m.

The Sea Dogs likewise are offering their
season ticket holders the opportunity to attend the Mill Rats 2 p.m. game on
Saturday for $5 also. *A box office fee of $1 applies.
The Mill Rats’ release claimed this was
the first NBL Canada/CHL doubleheader in history, but there is some debate
about that.
The Halifax Mooseheads and Saint John
Sea Dogs find themselves at opposite ends of rebuilds.
While Saint John’s maturing roster has
had a strong season and sit third overall in the QMJHL standings, the young Mooseheads
are in the early stages of a rebuild and appear destined for the league’s draft
lottery. The two teams meet tomorrow night at Harbour Station and again on
Saturday in Halifax.
The Mooseheads have a record of
18-34-6-1 for 43 points on the year. With just nine games left on their
schedule, they find themselves five points behind the 16th-place
Blainville-Boisbriand Armada who own the league’s final playoff spot. The
Armada have also played two fewer games than Halifax.
While it’s possible the Mooseheads could
catch the Armada – losers of five straight – they'd probably be, in the long run,
better off entering the lottery for the league’s first overall pick. The
Baie-Comeau Drakkar sit dead last in the league and will miss the playoffs.
Tomorrow’s game also marks the first
time Bokondji Imama and Kelly Bent have been eligible to play against each
other since The Incident. So that could be… interesting.
In other news…
Saturday’s game in Halifax will be the
final Saint John-Halifax meeting of the year. The Sea Dogs are 4-2-0-0 against the
Mooseheads this season.
Tomorrow’s game kicks off a busy stretch
of games for the Sea Dogs with less than a month left in the regular season.
Between tomorrow and March 19, the Dogs will play 12 games.
Daniel Del Paggio, a UNBSJ student, has
been named Saint John’s nominee for the Marcel-Robert Trophy as the QMJHL’s Scholastic
Player of the Year.
The Screaming Eagles are beginning a
very tough road trip tonight in Gatineau. They’ll visit Rouyn-Noranda on Friday
and Val-d’Or on Saturday.
The Sea Dogs were, yet again, an
honourable mention in the CHL Top 10 rankings.
Bowers has not committed to the QMJHL
yet, telling Sportsnet that “it’s not so much for me a preference of one route
over the other for one certain thing. It’s going to be what’s the best
situation, where am I going to be able to develop the best and pursue the goal
of playing in the NHL.”
Darrell Young knows Bowers personally.
If the Sea Dogs are able to move up in the first round, it wouldn’t be
surprising to see him being taken by Saint John.
NEW GOALIE
Sea Dogs general manager Darrell Young
is expecting the newly acquired Marc-Antoine Turcotte to push for the starters
job this fall.
"We feel Marc-Antoine is a solid
major junior goalie who can push Alex Bishop and challenge him for the starting
job," said Young in a Sea Dogs press release. "He's a good young man
with an outstanding work ethic."
Turcotte, who will be an overage
netminder this coming season, had an 8-7-0-2 record with a 2.17 goals against
average and a .908 save percentage in 18 games with the Blainville-Boisbriand
Armada.
THE OVERAGE QUESTION
With the addition of Turcotte, the Sea
Dogs now have five 1995-born players listed on their 2015 pre-season roster.
The other overagers are forward Mitchell Dempsey and defensemen Adam Bateman,
Braydon Blight and Shane MacDonald.
It’ll be interesting to see what happens
with the team’s overage situation moving forward. Does the team try and upgrade
a bit or are they content with choosing from these players?

named the Marketing Team of the Year
The QMJHL Entry Draft is finally heading
back to the Maritimes.
It was announced today that the 2016
draft will be held at Charlottetown’s Eastlink Centre on Saturday, June 4, 2016. The
QMJHL Annual Session will take place June 1-4.
Sea Dogs president Wayne Long said the new
agreement features some changes behind the scenes that will help the team
financially. Fans shouldn’t expect to notice any changes during their game day
experience, though.
“I won’t lie to you, it’s very tight
financially for us to operate here given the amount of fans we’re currently
drawing, so we needed to have a lease that we could live with that would make
the operation viable,” Long told the T-J.
Next year will be the Sea Dogs’ 11th
season in the city. The Saint John Flames lasted 10 seasons.
ZBORIL AN ALL-STAR
Sea Dogs defenseman Jakub Zboril was
named to the QMJHL’s rookie all-star team at the annual Golden Puck Awards last
night.
Zboril joined Shawinigan’s Samuel Girard
as d-men on the team. Sherbrooke goaltender Evan Fitzpatrick also made the team
while Cape Breton’s Evgeny Svechnikov, Quebec’s Dmytro Timashov and Charlottetown’s
Filip Chlapik were the forwards.
Halifax’s Timo Meier was named the top
professional prospect.
At No. 5 was Jakub Zboril. “He is great
at transitioning the puck, and has an extremely accurate and fairly hard shot
that he uses 5 on 5, on the power play and even shorthanded,” writes Devin
Slawson. “He is not at all afraid to lay the body and is very smart on the ice.”
Thomas Chabot was ranked seventh. “He’s
noticeably still learning the game which means he could still progress and
become a top prospect,” writes Slawson.
Last night at the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s
Golden Puck Awards, former Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant was inducted into
the league’s Hall of Fame.
As a league press release notes, Gallant “is the only
member in QMJHL history to win the President Cup four times in his combined
roles of player (2) and head coach (2). As a hockey player with Sherbrooke in
1982 and then in 1983 with Verdun, Gallant would taste the joy of the
championship series.”

In 2009-10, he made a comeback in the QMJHL, this time as
head coach of the Saint John Sea Dogs (New Brunswick). The team won three
consecutive regular season titles. In addition, Gallant’s team won the grand
final of the playoffs in 2011 and 2012. In 2011, the Sea Dogs won the Memorial
Cup as Gallant could count on a talented brigade including Jonathan Huberdeau,
Stanislav Galiev, Jacob DeSerres, Nathan Beaulieu and Simon Després.
Therefore Gerard Gallant has maintained in the regular
season, the best career winning percentage for a coach in the QMJHL
(.791). Unsurprisingly, he twice won the
Ron-Lapointe Trophy, awarded to the coach of the year, at the end of the
2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons.
Gallant, of course, is currently an assistant coach with
the Montreal Canadiens. The QMJHL website has an article on him here.
Jean-Luc Phaneuf, Norman Caisse, and Patrice Brisebois were
also inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Today, the host city for the 2015 Memorial Cup will be
announced. That is between Quebec City and Chicoutimi. Also, the team that will
select first overall in the QMJHL Entry Draft will be determined. That is
between Saint John and Sherbrooke and will take place around 12:45 PM AST.
As expected, Sebastien Auger was the big winner at the
Saint John Sea Dogs’ annual awards banquet held on Tuesday night at the Delta
Brunswick.
The Sea Dogs goaltender, who played a vital role in most
of Saint John’s wins this season, was named the club’s Most Valuable Player
while also picking up the Three Stars and Team Player Awards. It’s the second
straight year that Auger has been named MVP, joining Chris DiDomenico as the
only other player to win it back-to-back.

Former Saint John Sea Dogs defenseman Kevin Gagne has
been named the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Defenseman of the Year for the
2012-13 season.
Gagne was named the Émile “Butch” Bouchard Trophy winner last night in Montreal at the league’s annual Golden Puck Awards ceremony. Former Sea
Dogs defenseman Simon Despres won the award in 2011.
Gagne was also named a first team all-star.
It’s been an eventful few days for Gagne. The club Saint
John traded him to in December, the Rimouski Oceanic, were upset in the first-round of the President’s Cup playoffs by the Gatineau Olympiques despite
finishing fourth overall in the regular season. With his QMJHL career complete,
Gagne signed an Amateur Tryout Contract with the American Hockey League’s
Norfolk Admirals.
Gagne signed an entry-level contract with the Admirals’
parent team, the Anaheim Ducks, earlier this year.
It was quite an overage campaign for the Edmundston
native. He had 11 goals and 23 assists in 31 games with Saint John before being
dealt in December. In 31 games with the Oceanic he recorded six goals and 31
assists. He added another goal and an assist in six playoff games.
Gagne finished second in league scoring by defensemen with 71
points, third in goals with 17, and led the circuit in helpers with 54.
Originally drafted by Saint John in the second-round of
the 2008 QMJHL Entry Draft, Gagne spent four-and-a-half seasons with the Sea
Dogs, helping the club win three straight regular season titles, back-to-back
President’s Cups, and a Memorial Cup.
Former Saint John Sea Dogs defenseman Kevin Gagne has
been nominated for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League’s Émile “Butch”
Bouchard Trophy. The awarded is given out annually to the league’s best
defenseman.
Gagne, who was traded to the Rimouski Oceanic in December
after four-and-a-half seasons in Saint John, will go up against Halifax’s Konrad
Abeltshauser and Rouyn-Noranda’s Mathieu Brisebois in the top d-man category.
The 20-year old Anaheim Ducks prospect has six goals and
28 assists in 28 games with the Oceanic. In total, Gagne has 17 goals and 51
assists in for 68 points in 59 games. He sits second in the league in
defenseman scoring, goals, and assists behind Brisebois in each category.
Simon Despres was named the league’s top defenseman in
2011.
No current Sea Dogs players were nominated for league
awards.

Plante Trophy for having the league’s best goals against average.
Nathan Beaulieu was nominated for the Emile Bouchard
Trophy, awarded to the league’s best defenceman, but the honour went to
Rimouski’s Jerome Gauthier-Leduc.
There will be a new Canadian Hockey League Coach of the
Year this season as Jean-Francois Houle of the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada
beat out the Sea Dogs’ Gerard Gallant for the Ron Lapointe Trophy for the QMJHL’s
top coach. Gallant had won the award in both 2009-10 and 2010-11.
Corbeil, Beaulieu, and Huberdeau were all named to the league’s
second all-star team.

Nathan Beaulieu was nominated for the Émile “Butch” Bouchard Trophy, awarded to the league’s top defenseman. Jérôme Gauthier-Leduc of Rimouski and Blainville-Boisbriand’s Xavier Ouellet are the other nominees. Beaulieu will hope to keep it in the club, as Simon Després won the award last season.
Meanwhile, Pierre Durepos has gotten a nod for the Kevin Lowe Trophy as best defensive defenseman, along with Shawinigan’s Morgan Ellis and Martin Lefebvre of the Quebec Remparts.
Stephen MacAulay is up for the Guy Carbonneau Trophy as best defensive forward alongside Max LeSieur of the Cataractes and the Remparts’ Frédérick Roy, and Jonathan Huberdeau is nominated for the Paul Dumont Trophy as Personality of the Year. Rookies Mikhail Grigorenko of the Remparts and Nathan MacKinnon of Halifax are the other nominees.
Gerard Gallant will be looking to three-peat as coach of the year. He’s nominated for the Ron Lapointe Trophy, as are Jean-François Houle of the Armada, and the ever-colorful Patrick Roy of the Remparts. Gallant won the award in 2010 and 2011. He’s also the two-time defending CHL Coach of the Year.
The Sea Dogs had three winners last year; Després, Gallant, and Mike Kelly as General Manager of the Year. Jacob DeSerres also collected the Jacques Plante Trophy for having the league’s lowest goals against average, a trophy that Mathieu Corbeil will receive this year.
The nominees for the Michel-Brière Trophy for league MVP are the QMJHL’s top two scorers, Yanni Gourde of Victoriaville and Zach O’Brien of Bathurst, as well as Grigorenko. The full list of nominees is available here.
MONTREAL – He didn’t win any major awards, but Jonathan Huberdeau was recognized by the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Wednesday at the annual Golden Puck Awards show.
Huberdeau was named to the first all-star team after an all-star caliber season. The 17-year became the first Sea Dog to reach the triple-digit plateau in points in one season as he recorded 105 in 67 games. He led the squad in goals with 43 and assists with 62.
Joining Huberdeau on the first all-star team was fellow Sea Dog Simon Despres. The ‘Big Horse’ was named the QMJHL’s Defenseman of the Year on Wednesday night as well.
Despres had a long stay at Pittsburgh Penguins training camp and then missed more time as he represented Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships. In 47 games with Saint John, he averaged just under a point-per-game with 13 goals and 28 assists.
Forwards Sean Couturier of the Drummondville Voltigeurs and Jonathan Audy-Marchessault of the Quebec Remparts, defenseman Ryan Kavanagh of the Shawinigan Cataractes, and goaltender Christopher Gibson were also named to the first all-star team.

MONTREAL – Four members of the Saint John Sea Dogs were honoured Wednesday in Montreal as the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League held their annual awards night.
Defenseman Simon Despres, goaltender Jacob DeSerres, head coach Gerard Gallant, and director of hockey operations Mike Kelly were all awarded trophies for their accomplishments during the regular season.
Despres was named the league’s best defenseman, picking up the Émile “Butch” Bouchard Trophy. Along with representing Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships this past holiday season, the ‘Big Horse’ enjoyed a solid regular season. In 47 games, Despres recorded 13 goals and 28 assists and was a plus-29.
DeSerres won the Jacques-Plante Trophy as the QMJHL goaltender with the best goals against average. Since arriving on the scene in Saint John in the fall, DeSerres registered a 2.22 GAA, a 0.916 save percentage, and had an impressive 27-3-0-0 record with the Dogs.
For the second year-in-a-row, Gallant was named the Coach of the Year, winning the Ron-Lapointe Trophy. ‘Turk’ led the Sea Dogs to an incredible 58-7-1-2 record in the regular season and guided the Dogs to a division and regular season title for the second straight season.
Gallant won this award and the Canadian Hockey League’s top coach honour last season.
Finally, associate coach and director of hockey operation Mike Kelly won the Maurice Filion Trophy as General Manager of the Year. Kelly made some solid moves this season to ensure the Sea Dogs would be a strong contender this year and next. His biggest moves this season saw the club pick up DeSerres, Alexandre Beauregard, and Eric Gelinas.
Sea Dogs leading scorer Jonathan Huberdeau was nominated for three awards but will come empty handed. Zack Phillips and Nathan Beaulieu were also nominated for awards but were beat out by fellow Quebec Leaguers.

Like in the past, the coverage of the event will likely be poor. But in a shocking turn of events, the QMJHL Twitter page is expected to post updates and pictures.
SAINT JOHN – With team success comes personal success – and the Saint John Sea Dogs found that to be true this afternoon as the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League unveiled the nominees for the annual Golden Puck Awards Gala.
An insane five players and two members of the coaching staff are nominated. Jonathan Huberdeau is nominated for three awards while Simon Despres, Zack Phillips, Nathan Beaulieu, and Michael Kirkpatrick are all in contention as well. Head coach Gerard Gallant and director of hockey operations Mike Kelly are also included in the long list of nominees.
That’s a lot of people nominated for a lot of awards. But it can’t be all that surprising given that the Sea Dogs have sat atop the QMJHL standings nearly all year and were ranked No. 1 in the entire Canadian Hockey League for much of the season.
Along with all of the individual honours, Saint John also won the Jean Rougeau Trophy as regular season champions for the second straight year, the and Luc Robitaille Trophy as the best offensive team for the second straight season, and also claimed the Robert Lebel Trophy for the first time in club history as the team with the best goals-against-average. These three awards will be presented this Friday at Harbour Station as part of a pre-game presentation prior to Game One of the President’s Cup Playoffs opening round against the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles.
The Golden Puck Awards will be held April 6 in downtown Montreal, the day before the 2012 MasterCard Memorial Cup host is announced.

Tyson Barrie played well last night, Simon Despres has struggled. Would have thought Despres would have been top 6 but he needs to step up.

DeSERRES INTERVIEW
Sea Dogs goaltender Jacob DeSerres had a nice interview with Brandon Wheat Kings voice Bruce Luebke. In the interview, the former Wheat King talks about how it likes the Sea Dogs organization and the team’s chances at winning it all this year.
TESINK PICKS UP AWARD
Sea Dogs rookie Ryan Tesink was named the team’s mid-season top rookie last week. The award, presented by RDS, puts Tesink in some pretty high company with the likes of Martin Frk and Dillon Fournier picking up the Mooseheads’ and Maineiacs’ award, respectively.
Tesink has been solid this season, playing on a line with just about every Sea Dog at some point this season. In 28 games, the Saint John native has six goals and 12 assists.
The Saint John Sea Dogs’ QMJHL award winners will be featured during the six-o’clock news on CTV Atlantic tonight.

GEARING UP FOR 2011 If you thought the 2010 National Hockey League entry draft looked good for the Sea Dogs, hold on to your hat when 2011 rolls around.
The 2011 NHL draft is being called the “year of the Q,” with the possibility of having a fist full of first round picks, according to NHL.com.
It's possible the 2011 Draft will be the year of the "Q." League scout Chris Bordeleau was all smiles when discussing next year's crop, which includes four players from the Saint John Sea Dogs and high-profile sniper Sean Couturier of the Drummondville Voltigeurs.
The Saint John contingent consists of centers Jonathan Huberdeau (61 games, 15 goals, 43 points, plus-28) and Zack Philips (65 games, 16 goals, 44 points, plus-22), right wing Tomas Jurco (64 games, 26 goals, 51 points, plus-34) and defenseman Nathan Beaulieu (66 games, 12 goals, 45 points, plus-43).
"These kids are likely to be gone in the first round, so it's going to be a banner year in the 'Q' with these kids," Bordeleau said.
MOCK DRAFT SEASON With the Spring season now upon us, the mock NHL draft campaign has begun. Several writers at NHL.comhosted mock drafts over the past week, with some different opinions about where Stanislav Galiev will go in the draft. Here is what they had to say:

TO THE COMBINE WE GO Stanislav Galiev was one of one hundred draft eligible players selected to participate in the annual NHL Draft Combine in Toronto. The combine, which will run May 24-29, is an opportunity for teams to meet and interview prospects, as well as see them tested in an off-ice setting.

GELINAS IS DONE The phrase “in with a bang and out with a whimper” could describe former Sea Dog Marc-Antoine Gelinas’ season.
The 20-year old net minders season and QMJHL career is now over as his Shawinigan Cataractes fell in six games to the favoured Victoriaville Tigres on Sunday. Gelinas took a penalty at 11:16 of the OT frame in game six, allowing the Tigres to win the series on the power play.
Gelinas finished the year with a 30-15 record, 2.60 goals against average, and 0.915 save percentage. His junior career ends with a regular season record of 58-46.
Stich finished the season with the Junior with six goals and 17 assists in 47 games played. He ends his junior career with 26 goals, 74 assists, 367 penalty minutes, and a -2 rating in 243 regular season and playoff goals.
Of note, 28 of Stich’s 100 career points came in the post-season. Six of his 20 goals were also scored in the playoffs.
