JOHNSTON CALLED UP IN UNEXPECTED MOVE

In a completely unexpected move, Saint John Sea Dogs director of hockey operations Mike Kelly has announced that the team has recalled Will Johnston from the Summerside Western Capitals on the MJAHL.

Johnston was traded from Montreal to Saint John on August 19, 2009 in exchange for twelfth round draft pick. He has yet to play a game in the QMJHL and did not report to Sea Dogs training camp in August after being traded.

Simply put, Johnston is known more for his fists than his hockey skills. In 27 games played this season he has racked up 130 penalty minutes which puts him fourth in the MJAHL. Last season he helped the Capitals capture the league title and picked up 231 penalty minutes in 37 games played.

The 19-year old has 14 goals and 12 assists this season. The Charlottetown native had five goals and 18 assists last season with the junior “A” club. He was recently named the MJAHL’s Reebok CCM Player of the Week.

It is unknown how long he will stay with the club. His addition will surly take some pressure off Mike Thomas who has been handling the fighting along with being team captain.

With the call up, it is certainly possible something else is in the works in the Sea Dogs front office.
