News & Notes From Friday's Game

Some news and notes from last night’s game…
  • The Sea Dogs allowed five unanswered goals in this game. Four of them were scored in an ugly looking third period – two of them were power play goals, one was even strength, and the game-winner was a shorthanded marker.
  • The Ross Yates head coaching era got off to a rough start. There were some cheers when Yates was announced as the team’s head coach during the pre-game intros.
  • Sea Dogs were all kinds of undisciplined. Moncton had nine power play opportunities.
  • One of the bright spots of late for the Sea Dogs has been Spencer Smallman. With a goal last night, Smallman now has three goals and two assists in his last six games.
  • Ivan Barbashev returned to the Wildcats lineup last night. He had a solid return, recording a goal and an assist.
  • Mathieu Olivier, a seventh-round pick of the Wildcats in the 2013 QMJHL Entry Draft, scored his first Q goal in the first period.
  • Oliver Cooper scored his fourth goal of the season thanks to a brutal and unfortunate turnover by Wildcats goaltender Alex Dubeau.
  • Moncton swept the three stars. JC Campagan led the way with two goals and an assist. Campagna has three goals and an assist in two games against the Sea Dogs this season.
  • Saint John has now lost nine straight games overall and five straight on home ice. The Sea Dogs are still trying to record their 300th franchise regular season win.
  • The on-ice officials are wearing the MOvember jerseys again this year. They are awesome.
  • Saint John was without forwards Marcus Cuomo (hand), Samuel Dove-McFalls (upper body), and Mackenzie Brown (upper body) along with defensemen Will Thompson (upper body) and Michael Abbott (upper body). Cuomo is expected to return to action tonight against Charlottetown.
  • Brett Malone was called up from MHL Miramichi for this game. He had a team high four hits.
  • The Halifax Mooseheads scored 15 goals last night in Rouyn-Noranda. Saint John has scored 13 during their nine-game losing streak.

NOTES: Marcus Cuomo provided colour commentary again on News 88.9… Noah Zilbert returned to action after missing Saturday’s game in Chicoutimi… Matthew Highmore had seven shots. No other Sea Dog had more than two… Moncton now leads the Rivalry Cup 2-1… Jurij Repe had six penalty minutes… good fight between Lukas Walter and Reid Halabi in the first period... 50/50 winner took home $,3416.

NEXT GAME: The Sea Dogs take on the Charlottetown Islanders tonight at 7pm at Harbour Station.

  1. Kelly Bent is the real tough guy of this team. I can remember him taking on Beaton from the Islanders (Awesome fight)..Hopefully they go tonight as well. He cannot only fight. but plays hard as well. As for Walter, everytime he gets into a fight, he goes for the kidney shots. Seriously dude with all the equipment that everyone's wearing do you really think that's doing any damage?? Not nearly as impressed with him compared to some of SJ's previous enforcer, ie:Thomas, Dickinson, West, Gallant etc...
