SAINT JOHN – It was quite a weekend for the Saint John Sea Dogs.
Wining 5-0 in Halifax on Friday and 10-3 over PEI on Saturday, the Sea Dogs finished their three-in-three with a dominating 6-0 victory over the Quebec Remparts on Sunday afternoon at Harbour Station.
Danick Gauthier scored a pair to give him 16 goals in 15 games this season. Jason Cameron, Tomas Jurco, Nathan Beaulieu and Charles-Olivier Roussel had the other goals. Mathieu Corbeil recorded his second straight shutout by stopping all 22 shots he faced.
It was a dominating performance by Saint John. Quebec was able to stay in the game thanks to the play of goaltender Louis Domingue who kept it a three-goal contest heading into the third despite being outshot by a large margin.
The Sea Dogs outshot the Remparts 49-22 in the match. Quebec was unable to score on any power play opportunities and gave up two shorthanded goals.
The win gave Saint John their fifth straight win and a league-best record of 12-5-0-0.
Gauthier scored his 15th of the season at 4:27 to open the scoring. The 20-yaer old forward was parked between the faceoff circles and fired a hard wrist shot past the glove of Domingue to give Saint John a 1-0 advantage.
The Remparts went to the power play at 12:47 but were unable to tie the match despite a couple if quality chances.
Back at even strength, Jurco was at the side of the net along the goal and let a shot go from the sharp angle that was stopped by Domingue.
Just after Charles-Olivier Roussel nailed Raphael Corriveau, Cedrick Leblanc was called for hooking to give the Sea Dogs a power play at 17:53. The Dogs had some good pressure on and a few chances but couldn’t extend their lead prior to the buzzer sounding.
Much like Saturday’s game, shots were 19-5 Saint John in the opening frame.
Ryan Tesink hit iron early on in the second period. The play would be reviewed but it stayed a no-goal. A little later on, Jonathan Huberdeau fed Roussel on a two-on-one through the crease but the defenseman couldn’t get a good shot off. Then, Domingue made a big time pad stop on Aidan Kelly.
The Dogs went to the power play at 5:22 but couldn’t get much going.
At 9:47, Beaulieu and Frederick Roy dropped the gloves. Both players got some decent shots in before the tilt came to an end.
After Jurco and Mikael Tam went off for roughing, Adam Erne was stopped by Mathieu Corbeil on a partial break.
Back at even strength, the Sea Dogs made it 2-0. Roussel fired a shot from the point and Cameron made a beautiful redirect to get it past Domingue and double Saint John’s lead.
The Sea Dogs made it 3-0 at 14:13. Huberdeau drove through the slot and backhanded a lovely pass to an open Jurco who slid the disc in. Domingue wasn’t happy over the goal, breaking his stick over the net in frustration.
Super rookie Mikhail Grigorenko went in alone after a Sea Dogs player blew a tire. The puck hit the post and bounced out, forcing Corbeil to make a couple of quick stops.
Saint John went back to the man advantage at 16:54 but failed to score again.
Shots were 15-9 for the home team in the second period.
Tesink headed to the box at 1:21 for interference. While shorthanded, the Sea Dogs broke in on a three-on-none. Huberdeau went in and then passed over to Beaulieu who beat Domingue to make it a 4-0 affair.
When Tesink came out of the box, he and Phillips went in on a two-on-one but the Minnesota Wild prospect shot it wide.
Tesink headed back to the box at 5:05 and the Sea Dogs would strike again while shorthanded. At 5:21, Gauthier was stopped on a breakaway. He put in the brakes on and shoveled the rebound in to give Saint John a 5-0 lead.
Saint John headed to a five-on-three power play at 14:22. With just two-seconds remaining in the second penalty, Roussel snapped the puck past Domingue from the dot to make it a 6-0 game.
Quebec had a late power play chance but it wouldn’t matter.
Shots were 15-8 in favour of the Sea Dogs in the final stanza.
Quebec went 0-for-4 on the power play while Saint John went 1-for-6.
