RECAP: Drummondville 1, Saint John 4
By Kevin Chambers | SN Staff
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs picked
up their fourth consecutive win on Thursday night at Harbour Station, defeating
the Drummondville Voltigeurs 4-1.
There were plenty of chances early on
for the Sea Dogs with two power play opportunities. But it was the Voltigeurs
who scored the game’s first goal just as the second penalty had expired at 858
as Michael Carcone beat Alex Bishop after going around a tired Thomas
Chabot. The Sea Dogs maintained pressure for the majority of the opening
period and were eventually rewarded when Daniel Del Paggio finished off a
Matthew Highmore pass to even things at one a 1-1 at 17:18.
Just past the midway point of the second
period, the Sea Dogs took full advantage of a five-on-three opportunity as Sam
Povorozniouk hammered home a one time shot to give the Sea Dogs 2-1 lead at
10:47. On the ensuing five-on-four power play, Luke Green made two
outstanding plays - first picking the pocket of Alex Barre-Boulet, taking away
a breakaway opportunity, and followed the play up ice - scoring another one
time goal past Anthony Dumont-Bouchard to give Saint John a 3-1 advantage.
The third period got off to a rough
start for the Dogs after Samuel Dove-McFalls was assessed two minor penalties
for roughing and another for unsportsmanlike conduct - but the Sea Dogs’
penalty kill, along with some outstanding goaltending from Bishop, managed to
hold the fort. Shortly after the kill it was Joe Veleno wrapping one
around a downed Dumont-Bouchard, increasing the lead to 4-1 at 14:19. Later on, Spencer Smallman took
exception to a hit by Jean-Christophe Thivierge at 15:43 and connected with a
few punches and a take down.
- Scratches for the Sea Dogs were Bailey Webster (upper body), Nicholas Blachman (healthy), Cole Reginato (healthy), and Alexandre Bernier (healthy).
- Joey Ratelle was a scratch for the Voltigeurs due to an injury.
- Alex Bishop started his first game since shutting out the Halifax Mooseheads.
- Mathieu Joseph extended his home point streak to nine games.
- Michael Carcone recorded his league leading 46th goal of season.
- Attendance was 3,296.
