FINAL: Cape Breton 9, Saint John 2
SAINT JOHN - It was a weekend to forget for the Saint John Sea Dogs.
After suffering a 5-0 loss to the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles on Saturday, things went even worse for the team on Sunday afternoon, falling 9-2 to the same Eagles squad at Harbour Station.
Saint John was down just 2-1 after the first, but three goals by the Eagles in the opening 10 minutes of the third guided the visitors to an easy victory. Cape Breton is now 4-0-0-1 in their past five games.
The Eagles had nine different goal scorers on Sunday: Leon Gawanke, Mitchell Balmas, Mathias Laferriere, Felix Lafrance, Egor Sokolov, Gabriel Proulx, Brooklyn Kalmikov, Declan Smith and Alex Drover. Kevin Mandolese, who also started Saturday night's game, made 30 saves in the win.
Saint John goals came from Yohan Plamondon and Charlie DesRoches. Tommy DaSilva had another rough start, allowing nine goals on 33 shots.
The Screaming Eagles opened the scoring with a power play goal five minutes into the game. Gawanke fired a high wrist shot from between the blue line and the circle that beat DaSilva upstairs, giving the Eagles an early 1-0 lead.
Plamondon tied the game at 11:57. The Sea Dogs forward manage to break free of the Eagles defense and go in on a partial breakaway, sliding the puck through Mandolese to tie the game at 1-1.
Saint John's momentum was short lived. Just nine seconds after Plamondon's goal, Balmas kept the puck on a two-on-none and ripped a shot past the blocker of DaSilva to put Cape Breton back in front, 2-1.
The Eagles scored just 1:55 into the second period. The initial shot beat DaSilva but went off the post and stayed out. Lafferriere was in front and put the rebound in, giving the Eagles a 3-1 lead.
Cape Breton took a 4-1 lead at 4:33. Alex Drover carried the puck behind the net and threw it in front for Lafrance who beat DaSilva with a backhand shot.
The goals kept coming midway through the third. Sokolov scored at 9:26 and then Proulx connected at 11:00, giving the Eagles a 6-1 lead.
Saint John was awarded a full two-minute five-on-three power play at 14:31 but couldn't get a whole lot going. The man advantage ended 33 seconds early when Anthony Boucher was called for a hook.
Boucher went back to the box at 18:22 for a check from behind. At 18:49, Kalmikov beat DaSilva with a bullet of a wrist shot, making it 7-1 Eagles through 40 minutes.
The Eagles made it an 8-1 game at 10:49 of the third when Smith finished off a nice passing play. Then at 13:11, Drover slid puck past the Saint John defense and cut in front, beating DaSilva with a backhand shot for his first career QMJHL goal.
Saint John got a late third period power play goal from DesRoches, making it a 9-2 final.
