FINAL: Baie-Comeau 3, Saint John 5
SAINT JOHN – Make it a weekend sweep for the Saint John Sea Dogs.
Saint John wrapped up their three-in-three with a 5-3 victory over the Baie-Comeau Drakkar on Sunday afternoon at Harbour Station. The win ended a busy few days for the Sea Dogs as they defeated the PEI Rocket 7-3 on Friday and the Halifax Mooseheads 4-3 on Saturday.
The Sea Dogs have now won five straight contests and sit first overall in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League with a 19-6-0-0 record.
On Support Our Troops Day at Harbour Station, Nathan Beaulieu, Stephen MacAulay, Jason Cameron, Tomas Jurco and Charles-Olivier Roussel all scored in the win. Goaltender Sebastien Auger made 23 saves.
The Drakkar, also playing their third game in as many days, had two goals from Lukas Cingel and a solo marker from Jean-Philippe Caron. Antonio Mastropietro allowed five goals on 16 shots.
Saint John led 2-0 at 11:07 of the first period following goals from Beaulieu and MacAulay. Cingel scored at 14:45 of the opening frame to make it 2-1 after 20 minutes.
In the second, Cameron made it a 3-1 game at 8:49 but the Drakkar tied it 11 seconds later to make it 3-2 Saint John after two.
On a power play at 1:52 of the third, Cingel tied it up. But on a Sea Dogs power play, Jurco put the Dogs ahead again. After a huge penalty kill by the Dogs, Roussel made it 5-3 Saint John at 8:34 and to knock the wind out of the Drakkar’s sails.
Shots were 26-16 in favour of Baie-Comeau. It wasn’t a great night for Saint John’s offense who were missing Jonathan Huberdeau, Stanislav Galiev and Ryan Tesink once again. At one point, Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant made the bold move of putting put five defenseman on the ice at once.
Baie-Comeau went 1-for-3 on the power play while Saint John went 1-for-2.
The Sea Dogs’ hectic schedule continues this Wednesday when they host the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies at 7pm.
