Recap: Sea Dogs win 4-2

FINAL: Halifax 2, Saint John 4
Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
SAINT JOHN - The losing streak is over.

Tyler Peddle scored a pair of goals to lead the Saint John Sea Dogs to a 4-2 win over the Halifax Mooseheads on Thursday at TD Station, ending an 11-game losing streak. The Mooseheads, meanwhile, have now lost six straight.

Peddle opened the scoring – his first goal since Saint John's last win a month ago – and netted the game-winner, beating Mooseheads netminder Nicolas Gillham-Cirka on a breakaway at 3:26 of the third period.

Dylan Rozzi and Olivier Groulx also scored. Goaltender Eric Young earned his first QMJHL win, making 24 saves.

Unsurprisingly, offense was hard to come by at times for both teams in this game. The two squads are near the bottom of the league's offensive categories. Shots ended 26-22 in favour of Halifax with 10 of those Mooseheads shots coming in the third period.

The Sea Dogs bent at times but never broke. Saint John never trailed in this game but did allow the Mooseheads to tie the game twice and survived some sustained offensive zone pressure by the Moose in the third period.

Antoine Fontaine and Carlos Handel scored for Halifax. Gillham-Cirka made 18 saves in the loss.

The win pushes Saint John back into a tie with the Gatineau Olympiques for the QMJHL's 16th and final playoff spot with 40 points. Gatineau has played two less games.

Game Day 56: vs Mooseheads

SAINT JOHN - With nine regular season games remaining, the Saint John Sea Dogs are entering must-win territory if they want to qualify for this year's QMJHL post-season.

The Sea Dogs are just two points back of the Gatineau Olympiques for the 16th and final playoff spot. But the Olympiques are surging right now (they did lose last night to the Chicoutimi Sagueneens), meaning the Sea Dogs need to try and collect as many points as possible in these final few weeks.

The Halifax Mooseheads visit Saint John tonight, a team that is just four points ahead of the Sea Dogs. This is a big game for both clubs. They'll meet twice more in the regular season following this evening's matchup.

The Sea Dogs have lost 11 straight games while the Mooseheads have dropped five straight.

Game time tonight at TD Station is 7 p.m.

Sea Dogs currently outside playoff picture

Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
The Saint John Sea Dogs and Gatineau Olympiques have been heading in opposite directions of late.

The Sea Dogs were swept on their three-game Quebec road trip last week, extending their losing streak to 11 games. The Olympiques, meanwhile, have won three straight, earning wins over the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, Rouyn-Noranda Huskies and Sherbrooke Phoenix.

Gatineau's winning streak has pushed them into the 16th and final playoff spot, two points up on Saint John. Gatineau has also played two fewer games.
The Sea Dogs will play three games this week, including a key Thursday matchup against the Halifax Mooseheads, who remain within striking distance for both Saint John and Gatineau.

Thursday, Feb. 27 vs Mooseheads
Saturday, March 1 at Cape Breton
Sunday, March 2 at Cape Breton

The Olympiques will also play three games this week, all of which will be on home ice.

Wednesday, Feb. 26 vs Sagueneens
Friday, Feb. 28 vs Foreurs
Sunday, March 2 vs Remparts

The top 16 teams in the QMJHL's overall standings qualify for the playoffs.

The Sea Dogs have nine regular season games remaining, which includes four home games.

Recap: Sea Dogs lose 4-1

FINAL: Saint John 1, Shawinigan 4
Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
SHAWINIGAN, QC - The Saint John Sea Dogs had their best performance of this road trip but it still wasn't enough on Sunday.

Dylan Rozzi netted Saint John's only goal in a 4-1 loss to the Shawinigan Cataractes at Centre Gervais Auto. The loss was Saint John's 11th straight, tying the second longest losing skid in club history.

The Sea Dogs once again allowed the game's first goal but Rozzi's power play marker tied it up at 16:44 of the middle frame.

The Cataractes scored late in the first to retake the lead – a lead they would hold onto.

Saint John was able to hang around in this game at least with Shawinigan's fourth goal being an empty netter at 18:24 of the third. The Sea Dogs outshot the Cataractes 13-9 in the final frame and had a few decent chances.

Jiri Klima scored twice for Shawinigan while Felix Lacerte and Kody Dupuis added singles. Mathys Fernandez made 24 stops in the win.

Eric Young made 32 saves in the loss.

Saint John fell 14-0 in Baie-Comeau on Thursday and then 6-1 on Friday in Chicoutimi. The Sea Dogs head home with three losses that saw them get outscored 24-2.

Game Day 55: at Shawinigan

SHAWINIGAN, QC - To say it's been a bad road trip so far for the Saint John Sea Dogs would be an understatement.

The Sea Dogs dropped the first two games of this three-game, four-day Quebec excursion by a combined score of 20-1. They carry a 10-game losing streak into today's matchup against the Shawinigan Cataractes.

Unfortunately for Saint John, the Cataractes are not an easy opponent. Shawinigan defeated the Sea Dogs 6-4 last Saturday at TD Station.

At this point, any positives the Sea Dogs can get out of this road trip will be welcome. Game time at Centre Gervais Auto is 5 p.m. Atlantic.

2024-25 regular season records: The Sea Dogs are 19-35-0-0 for 38 points (sixth Maritimes/10th Eastern/17th QMJHL) while the Cataractes are 30-18-1-4 for 65 points (second Central/third Western/seventh QMJHL).

Last games: The Sea Dogs are coming off a 6-1 loss in Chicoutimi on Friday. Egan Beveridge scored Saint John's only goal while Eric Young made 45 saves in the loss. The Cataractes are coming off a 5-0 home win over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan on Friday. Jordan Tourigny, Louis-Philippe Fontaine, Brogan McNeil, Vince Elie and Jiri Klima all scored for Shawinigan. Mathys Fernandez made 28 stops for the shutout.

Recap: Sea Dogs lose 6-1

FINAL: Saint John 1, Chicoutimi 6
Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
CHICOUTIMI, QC - The Saint John Sea Dogs' losing streak has reached 10 games.

Despite a 45-save performance from goaltender Eric Young, the Sea Dogs fell 6-1 to the Chicoutimi Sagueneens at the Georges Vezina Centre on Friday.

Young allowed 12 goals in Saint John's 14-0 blowout loss on Thursday night in Baie-Comeau. The goaltender was forced to play the majority of that game due to Justin Robinson suffering an injury during his short stint of playing time. The injury also meant Young would be starting again in Chicoutimi.

Much like all of Saint John's recent losses, the Sea Dogs fell behind early, going down 2-0 at 12:59 of the opening frame. Egan Beveridge got Saint John back within one at 13:57 only for the Dogs to allow another Chicoutimi goal less than two minutes later.

Maxime Masse netted a pair of goals for the Sagueneens while singles came from Thomas Desruisseaux, Loic Usereau, Emile Guite and Emmanuel Vermette. Jacob Brochu only had to make 17 saves to earn the win.

Saint John will play the final game of this three-game Quebec road trip Sunday in Shawinigan.

Game Day 54: at Chicoutimi

CHICOUTIMI, QC - It can't get much worse for the Saint John Sea Dogs.

The Sea Dogs lost their ninth straight game last night in Baie-Comeau, suffering a 14-0 blowout loss to the Drakkar. It was the worst loss in franchise history.

Saint John will be in tough again tonight, facing a Sagueneens team that currently sits fourth overall in the QMJHL standings.

Game time tonight is 8 p.m. Atlantic.

TV/Radio/Stream: None/None/CHL TV

2024-25 regular season records: The Sea Dogs are 19-34-0-0 for 38 points (sixth Maritimes/10th Eastern/16th QMJHL) while the Sagueneens are 30-13-3-7 for 70 points (second East/third Eastern/fourth QMJHL).

Last games: The Sea Dogs are coming off a 14-0 loss in Baie-Comeau last night. Eric Young allowed 12 goals on 40 shots while Justin Robinson allowed two goals on two shots before leaving the game with an injury. The Sagueneens are coming off a 5-2 win in Drummondville last night. Maxime Masse netted a pair of goals while singles came from Thomas Desruisseaux, Emmanuel Vermette and Emile Ricard. Raphael Precourt made 45 saves in the win.

Recap: Sea Dogs lose 14-0

FINAL: Saint John 0, Baie-Comeau 14
Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
BAIE-COMEAU, QC - The Saint John Sea Dogs suffered the worst loss in franchise history on Thursday.

The Sea Dogs allowed six goals in the first period in a 14-0 loss to the Baie-Comeau Drakkar. The previous team record for goals allowed in a game was 12, which happened twice during the 2006-07 season.

The Sea Dogs have now lost nine straight games. It certainly feels like this season has reached rock bottom.

Starts have been a problem for Saint John over the past couple games – and it was no different in this one. Baie-Comeau opened the scoring just 4:09 in, led 3-0 at 10:27 and carried a 6-0 lead into the dressing room.

Eric Young got the start for Saint John but was pulled after allowing three goals on nine shots. Justin Robinson faced just two shots before leaving the game with an injury late in the first period. Young allowed nine goals on 31 shots in the final 40:46.

Matyas Melovsky had a hat trick for Baie-Comeau; Justin Poirier and Samuel Brunet each scored twice; and singles came from Alexis Michaud, Jules Boilard, Samuel Boisvert, Skogen Schrott, Oliver Samson, Louis-Charles Plourde and Shawn Pearson.

Lucas Beckman stopped all 30 shots he faced in the shutout victory.

Game Day 53: at Baie-Comeau

BAIE-COMEAU, QC - Perhaps a Quebec road trip is just what the Saint John Sea Dogs need right now.

The club begins a three-game road stretch tonight in Baie-Comeau where they'll look to snap an eight-game losing streak. It's been nearly a month since Saint John last won a game (Jan. 26 in Halifax).

In recent games, starts have been Saint John's problem. We'll see if they can have a stronger first period tonight against the Drakkar. Puck drop is 8 p.m. Atlantic.

This is Saint John's final regular season road trip outside the Maritimes. They'll also make stops in Chicoutimi and Shawinigan before returning home.

TV/Radio/Stream: None/None/CHL TV

2024-25 regular season records: The Sea Dogs are 19-33-0-0 for 38 points (sixth Maritimes/10th Eastern/16th QMJHL) while the Drakkar are 29-19-3-1 for 62 points (third East/fourth Eastern/eighth QMJHL).

Last games: The Sea Dogs are coming off a 4-2 home loss to the Cape Breton Eagles on Monday. Olivier Groulx and Ben Cross scored for Saint John. Eric Young made 36 stops in the loss. The Drakkar are coming off a 6-2 win over the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies on Saturday. Justin Poirier netted a pair of goals for Baie-Comeau while singles came from Louis-Charles Plourde, Alexis Michaud, Jules Boilard and Evan Courtois. Lucas Beckman made 36 stops in the win.

Notebook: Off to Quebec

Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
The Saint John Sea Dogs travel to Quebec for the final time this regular season this week.

The Sea Dogs visit the Baie-Comeau Drakkar and Chicoutimi Sagueneens on Thursday and Friday, respectively, before wrapping up the trip with a Sunday afternoon game in Shawinigan.

The Sea Dogs don't play these three teams too often but they have all met very recently. The Sagueneens visited Saint John on Jan. 23, the Drakkar on Feb. 8 and the Cataractes on Feb. 15. Saint John lost all three of those games.

Against Quebec based clubs this season, the Sea Dogs are 6-15-0-0

Saint John will look to end an eight-game losing streak on this trip. Their last win was Jan. 26 in Halifax.

PLAYOFF UPDATE
While this will be the final regular season trip to Quebec for the Sea Dogs, they will very likely face a Quebec club in the opening round of the playoffs – if they qualify, of course.

The Gatineau Olympiques earned a big 2-1 shootout win over the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada on Saturday, pushing them within two points of the Sea Dogs for that 16th and final playoff spot.
Gatineau didn't play Sunday or Monday, so they now have a game in hand on Saint John.

The Olympiques will host the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies on Friday and visit the Sherbrooke Phoenix on Sunday.

Recap: Sea Dogs lose 4-2

FINAL: Cape Breton 4, Saint John 2
Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
SAINT JOHN - A bad start was once again too much for the Saint John Sea Dogs to overcome on Monday afternoon at TD Station.

Much like Saturday's loss to the Shawinigan Cataractes, the Sea Dogs had a rough first period in a 4-2 loss to the Cape Breton Eagles. The Sea Dogs gave up a couple early goals and were trying to catch up all game long.

The Sea Dogs were outplayed by a significant margin in the opening frame, trailing 2-0 and getting outshot 22-6. Saint John rebounded in the final two periods, scoring two quick goals in the third to get within one. But it was simply too late for the Dogs, allowing an empty net goal in the final minute to fall 4-2.

The loss was Saint John's eighth straight overall and seventh straight at home.

Jacob Newcombe netted a pair of goals for Cape Breton while singles came from Angelo Fullerton and Joseph Henneberry. Jakub Milota made 35 stops in the win.

Olivier Groulx and Ben Cross scored for Saint John. Eric Young, who played most of Saturday's game after relieving Justin Robinson in the first period, made 36 saves in the loss.

Game Day 52: vs Eagles

SAINT JOHN - There's just over a month left in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League regular season and the Saint John Sea Dogs are about to get very familiar with the Cape Breton Eagles.

The Sea Dogs and Eagles play the first of five remaining meetings this afternoon at TD Station. Game time for this Family Day affair is 3 p.m.

Saint John has won two of the three meetings between the two this season – but they haven't met since mid-December. The Sea Dogs have been in a tailspin since then and will look to end a seven-game losing streak today.

This is Saint Johns' final home game until Feb. 27. They'll play their next three games in Quebec.

TV/Radio/Stream: None/Sea Dogs Radio/CHL TV

2024-25 regular season records: The Sea Dogs are 19-32-0-0 for 38 points (sixth Maritimes/10th Eastern/16th QMJHL) while the Eagles are 26-17-4-3 for 59 points (second Maritimes/fifth Eastern/10th QMJHL).

Last games: The Sea Dogs are coming off a 6-4 home loss to the Shawinigan Catarctes on Saturday. Dylan Rozzi, Elliot Dubé, Ben Cross and Olivier Groulx all scored for Saint John. Justin Robinson allowed two goals on six shots while Eric Young allowed three goals on 26 shots in relief. The Eagles are coming off a 5-4 home win over the Sherbrooke Phoenix on Friday. Cole Burbidge scored twice while singles came from Xavier Daigle, Jacob Newcombe and Cam Squires. Jakob Milota made 24 saves in the win.

Recap: Sea Dogs lose 6-4

FINAL: Shawinigan 6, Saint John 4
Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs fell into a hole early and were never able to fully dig themselves out of it on Saturday at TD Station.

The Shawinigan Cataractes scored three times in the first 8:39 of the first period in a 6-4 win over the Sea Dogs. Saint John was able to rebound from the rough start, getting within a goal on a few occasions but could never pull even with their rivals.

The Sea Dogs have now lost seven straight games overall and six straight at home.

Former Sea Dogs forward Vince Elie once again had a strong showing against his old team, recording two goals and an assist. Oddly enough, Olivier Groulx, who the Sea Dogs acquired in the Elie deal, posted a goal and two assists.

Mathieu Plante, Matvei Girdin, Chad Lygitsakos and Louis-Philippe Fontaine also had Shawinigan goals. Mathys Fernandez made 30 stops in the win.

Groulx, Dylan Rozzi, Elliot Dubé and Ben Cross all scored for Saint John. Justin Robinson was pulled in the first period after allowing two goals on six shots in the opening 4:59. Eric Young allowed three goals on 26 shots in relief.

Game Day 51: vs Cataractes

SAINT JOHN - It's a rare Saturday afternoon home game for the Saint John Sea Dogs today.

The Sea Dogs will look to end a six-game losing streak when they host the Shawinigan Cataractes at 3 p.m. This is the first meeting of the season between the two with the rivals scheduled to face each other again next weekend in Shawinigan.

It's been a rough New Brunswick road trip for the Cataractes so far, falling 5-4 in overtime on Thursday in Moncton and 5-2 in Bathurst last night.

As part of the annual All For One weekend, today will be the first Kids Takeover Game at TD Station. Seven children have been chosen by the Sea Dogs to join them on game day, learning from different members of the team’s staff including the coaching staff, training staff, PA announcer, referees, DJ and more.

Tough week ahead for playoff bubble teams

Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
It doesn't seem like anybody wants that last spot in the Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League post-season.

The Saint John Sea Dogs, who currently hold the 16th and final playoff spot, have lost six straight games. The 17th-place Gatineau Olympiques, meanwhile, have lost eight straight (but have earned four loser points during that stretch) while the last-place Victoriaville Tigres have lost six consecutive games.

The Tigres sit 10 points back of Saint John and, with 15 games remaining, are basically out of the playoff picture. It's possible they could make it, but it would require quite a turnaround and some luck.
It's likely to come down to Gatineau (17th, 34 points), Saint John (16th, 38 points) and the 15th-place Halifax Mooseheads (15th, 41 points) for the final spots. The Quebec Remparts and Val-d'Or Foreurs aren't that far off either, but let's focus on Gatineau, Saint John and Halifax for now.

Of the three, Saint John likely has the "easiest" schedule this week – but that's not saying much. It won't be an easy week for any of these teams.

Halifax (15th, 41 points)
Thursday, Feb. 13 vs Cape Breton (10th, 55 points)
Saturday, Feb. 15 at Moncton (1st, 78 points)
Monday, Feb. 17 vs Moncton (1st, 78 points)

Saint John (16th, 38 points)
Saturday, Feb, 15 vs Shawinigan (6th, 60 points)
Monday, Feb. 17 vs Cape Breton (10th, 55 points)

Gatineau (17th, 34 points)
Thursday, Feb. 13 at Rimouski (2nd, 73 points)
Saturday, Feb, 15 at Blainville-Boisbriand (8th, 59 points)

If the playoffs started today, the Sea Dogs would be moved into the Western Conference and face the Drummondville Voltigeurs in the opening round. The two met in last year's first round and, like last year, Saint John would be major underdogs.

The Sea Dogs and Mooseheads meet three more times in the regular season – Feb. 27 at Saint John, March 7 at Saint John and March 8 at Halifax – in what could be key games for playoff positioning.

Notebook: Cunningham earns camp invite

Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
SAINT JOHN - Bryce Cunningham is the first player to receive an invite to Saint John Sea Dogs training camp this August.

Cunningham was named the most valuable player of the inaugural Dog Bowl on Saturday, helping Sussex High School defeat St. Malachy's 7-6 in overtime in the championship game.
Cunningham, a 16-year-old forward, played 34 games with the Saint John Vito's last season, recording a goal and an assist.

The Dog Bowl featured teams from Kennebecasis Valley High School, Rothesay High School, St. Malachy’s Memorial High School and Sussex Regional High School compete in a two day tournament at TD Station. The MVP of the event earned an invite to Sea Dogs training camp.

Recap: Sea Dogs lose 5-4

FINAL: Baie-Comeau 5, Saint John 4
Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
SAINT JOHN - The Baie-Comeau Drakkar are heading home with a win.

After falling in Bathurst on Thursday and Charlottetown on Friday, the Drakkar are returning home with two points thanks to a come-from-behind 5-4 win over the Saint John Sea Dogs on Saturday at TD Station.

The Sea Dogs were looking good in the second period, leading 4-1 – but a Drakkar goal with 12.6 seconds remaining in the middle frame was a sign of things to come. Baie-Comeau scored three times in the first 9:15 of the third to grab a 5-4 lead and never looked back.

Shots ended 15-6 in favour of the Drakkar in the third period. The wheels really fell off the Sea Dogs in the final frame – a common trait of a rebuilding club like Saint John, and one that has been seen several times this season.

The Sea Dogs have now dropped six straight games.

Justin Poirier and Samuel Boisvert each scored twice for Baie-Comeau while Louis-Charles Plourde added a single. Mathys Routhier allowed three goals on 14 shots before getting pulled early in the second period. Lucas Beckman allowed a goal on 13 shots in relief.

Zachary Morin, Nicolas Bilodeau, Benjamin Amyot and Reid Calder all scored for Saint John. Justin Robinson, who made some big stops in this one, allowed five goals on 38 shots in the loss.

Game Day 50: vs Drakkar

SAINT JOHN - For the first time this season, the Saint John Sea Dogs will take on the Baie-Comeau Drakkar.

The Sea Dogs will look to break a five-game losing streak this evening, which was extended with a 6-0 home loss to the Moncton Wildcats last night.

The Drakkar, meanwhile, are coming off a 4-2 loss in Charlottetown last night, a game that saw Baie-Comeau record a total of seven shots in the first 40 minutes. The Drakkar are looking to get a win on this road trip before heading home. They fell 4-3 in Bathurst on Thursday.

Recap: Sea Dogs lose 6-0

FINAL: Moncton 6, Saint John 0
Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
SAINT JOHN - They hung around, but the Saint John Sea Dogs were no match for the league-leading Moncton Wildcats on Friday night at TD Station.

The Sea Dogs once again struggled to create scoring chances and went 0/4 on the power play in a 6-0 loss to the Wildcats. Shots on goal ended 44-19 in favour of Moncton with Saint John recording 14 dangerous shot.

Saint John has now dropped five straight games for a second time this season.

Mathis Rousseau stopped all 19 shots he faced to earn his first shutout of the season.

The Wildcats had goals from six different skaters: Juraj Pekarcik, Vincent Collard, Alex Mercier, Caleb Desnoyers, Julius Sumpf and Dyllan Gill. Sumpf added two assists.

The Sea Dogs were able to keep the score close for much of the game, trailing 2-0 after one and 3-0 after two. But despite the score, it was a one sided match with the Wildcats carrying the play almost all night – as one would expect.

Sea Dogs goaltender Eric Young, making his first QMJHL start, made 38 stops in the loss.

Game Day 49: vs Wildcats

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs will be in tough to break their losing streak tonight.

The Sea Dogs, who dropped a fourth straight game on Wednesday when they fell on home ice to the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada, will look to pull off a major upset when they host the Moncton Wildcats at 7 p.m.

The Wildcats, winners of three straight, sit first overall in the QMJHL standings with 76 points – double the amount of points the Sea Dogs have this season.

Saint John does have two wins against Moncton this season but the Wildcats have won the two most recent meetings.

Jersey design contest winner unveiled

For the first time, the Saint John Sea Dogs will wear a fan designed jersey on Saturday at TD Station.

Recap: Sea Dogs lose 6-2

FINAL: Blainville-Boisbriand 6, Saint John 2
Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs lost a fourth straight game on Wednesday at TD Station.

The Sea Dogs had a respectable start to the contest but quickly fell into a deficit, ultimately falling 6-2 to the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. This losing skid began a week ago in Boisbriand when the Armada defeated the Sea Dogs 4-3.

Saint John had a good start to the opening frame but the the visitors would quickly gain control, grabbing a 2-0 lead heading into intermission.

In the second, Blainville-Boisbriand carried the play, outshooting Saint John 16-5 and taking a commanding 4-1 lead. The Sea Dogs' lone goal came from Reid Calder on a misplay behind the net by Armada goaltender Felix Hamel.

The Sea Dogs had a chance to take the momentum in the third when Zachary Morin scored on a partial breakaway just 1:44 in. But any chance of a Saint John comeback ended when Ludovik Grenier scored on a penalty shot at 8:17, which made it 5-2.

Along with Grenier, Eliot Litalien, Rafael Cloutier, Justin Carbonneau, Olivier Lemieux and Egor Goriunov all scored for Blainville-Boisbriand. Hamel made 20 saves in the win, facing just eight dangerous shots.

The Armada, who entered the game with the QMJHL's best power play, went 2/2 on the man advantage.

Justin Robinson made 34 saves in the loss.

Game Day 48: vs Armada

SAINT JOHN - The Saint John Sea Dogs begin a stretch of five straight home games tonight.

The Sea Dogs play their first home game since Jan. 24 this evening when they host the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada at TD Station. Game time is 7 p.m.

The Sea Dogs and Armada met last Wednesday in Boisbriand where the home side earned a 4-3 victory. The Armada were without star forward Justin Carbonneau in that game due to a suspension – but he will presumably be in action tonight.

Saint John will look to put a challenging Quebec road trip behind them. That loss in Boisbriand was the first of three straight.

Notebook: Difficult January ends

Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
The Saint John Sea Dogs are likely quite happy to see January come to an end.

It was a rough start to 2025 for the Sea Dogs, posting a 3-9-0-0 record during the month. Two of their three wins came in overtime while their one regulation win – a 4-1 win in Halifax on Jan. 26 – was the team's first victory that didn't come in overtime or shootout since Dec. 4.

The recent struggles have slid the Sea Dogs down the standings. They now sit last in the QMJHL's Eastern Conference and 16th overall in the league. Saint John has, however, played one less game than the Halifax Mooseheads, who are just one point up on the Sea Dogs.

The top 16 teams in the QMJHL make the playoffs. The Sea Dogs are still in decent position, sitting five points ahead of the 17th-place Gatineau Olympiques and 10 points ahead of the last-place Victoriaville Tigres.

If the playoffs started today, the Sea Dogs would cross over to the Western Conference and face the Drummondville Voltigeurs for a second straight season.

BACK HOME
After four straight games on the road, the Sea Dogs will play their next five games on home ice.

The Sea Dogs host the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada on Wednesday at TD Station, exactly one week after the two met in the Montreal suburbs. The Armada won that game 4-3.

Saint John will have their hands full on Friday night when they host Gardiner MacDougall and the first-place Moncton Wildcats. Then on Saturday, the Baie-Comeau Drakkar make their lone visit of the season to Saint John.

The Sea Dogs also play at home on Saturday, Feb. 15, hosting the Shawinigan Cataractes in a 3 p.m. contest. They will close out this stretch of home games on Monday, Feb. 17, taking on Cape Breton Eagles in a Family Day matinee.

Saint John is 11-12-0-0 at home this season. It's hard to believe, but the Sea Dogs will have just four home games remaining after that Feb. 17 contest.

Gravel signs with BCHL's Spruce Kings

Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
Charles-Edward Gravel has found a new home.

The BCHL's Prince George Spruce Kings announced the signing of the overage goaltender on Sunday. The news comes two weeks after the Saint John Sea Dogs abruptly released Gravel.

"Charles-Edward is an elite level veteran goalie," said Spruce Kings general manager Mike Hawes in a news release. "We jumped on adding him to our team once the opportunity presented itself. We’re excited to integrate him into the group as we make a strong push the rest of the regular season and into the playoffs.”

Prince George currently sits ninth in the 10-team Coastal Conference with a 13-20-3-1 record.

The Spruce Kings are back in action next weekend against, ironically, the Coquitlam Express. The Sea Dogs recently signed Express goaltender Eric Young to take Gravel's roster spot.

Gravel had arguably been Saint John's most valuable player on the ice before being released, posting a 14-14 record to go along with a 2.82 goals against average and a .914 save percentage. His three shutouts are still tied for the second most in the QMJHL.

Gravel was pulled after two periods by the Sea Dogs on Jan. 17 and was not seen on the bench in the third period. It was announced a couple days later the club had released him.

“We are committed to maintaining a culture that aligns with our values and ensure a positive environment for everyone involved with our team,” said Sea Dogs president Trevor Georgie. “Charles-Edward is a talented goalie, and we wish him well in his future.”

Recap: Sea Dogs lose 7-2

FINAL: Saint John 2, Val-d'Or 7
Michael Hawkins/Saint John Sea Dogs
VAL-D'OR, QC - It was a rough ending to a rough road trip for the Saint John Sea Dogs.

Former Sea Dogs forward Noah Reinhart recorded two goals and two assists to lead the Val-d'Or Foreurs to a 7-2 win over the Sea Dogs on Saturday at Centre Agnico Eagle.

The Sea Dogs dropped all three games on this tough Quebec road trip, also losing 4-3 in Blainville-Boisbriand on Wednesday and 6-1 in Rouyn-Noranda on Friday.

Saint John was never really in this one, trailing 3-0 after the first period and 5-1 after two. One of Saint John's goals came late in the second period and the other in the third when the game was already well out of reach.

Along with a pair of goals from Reinhart, Philippe Veilleux also scored twice while Raphael Laviolette, Nathan Brison and Donovan Arsenault added singles. Cedric Masse made 20 saves in the victory.

Reid Calder and William Yared had Saint John goals. Justin Robinson allowed five goals on 22 shots through 40 minutes. Eric Young, in his first QMJHL appearance, allowed two goals on 19 shots in the third.

Video: Beaulieu fights Vezina

Fights are so rare in the QMJHL these days that almost each one stands out. But Friday's tilt between Jacob Beaulieu and William Vezina stood out because, wow, what a fight.

From HockeyFights.com, here's the first period fight between the 5'09", 170 lbs Beaulieu and 6'05", 188 lbs Vezina.

Both players were given fighting majors and game misconducts. The Rouyn-Noranda Huskies won the game 6-1.

The QMJHL website shows that Beaulieu has been suspended four games for a staged fight and accumulation of codes. Vezina, meanwhile, has been suspended three games for a staged fight.

According to HockeyFights.com, this was just the second fight of the season for Beaulieu. The website recently highlighted that Beaulieu's fight against Florent Houle on Oct. 25 is the highest ranked QMJHL fight this season.
The Saint John Sea Dogs have just four fights season, according to HockeyFights.com. Darien Reynolds and Reid Calder have the other fights.

Game Day 47: at Val-d'Or

VAL-D'OR, QC - The Saint John Sea Dogs play the final game of this three-game Quebec road trip today.

After a 4-3 loss in Blainville-Boisbriand on Wednesday and a 6-1 loss in Rouyn-Noranda last night, the Sea Dogs will be looking to head home with at least a win when they visit the Val-d'Or Foreurs this evening. Game time is 5 p.m. Atlantic.

On paper, this should be the easiest game of this road trip for Saint John. The Foreurs sit just three points ahead of the Sea Dogs in the standings. But Saint John will no doubt be dealing with some fatigue, playing their third game in four days and second in less than 24 hours.
