There are several things to note about the Saint John Sea Dogs’ training camp roster.
According to the Sea Dogs’ website, Tomas Jurco will not even be in the country until the first week of September, meaning he miss training camp and the pre-season. He will not be attending camp due to scholastic commitments in his home country of Slovakia.
In his rookie season last year, Jurco recorded 26 goals and 25 assists in 64 regular season games and added another seven goals and 10 assists in 21 playoff games.
2009 Pittsburgh Penguins first round pick Simon Despres will not be attending camp because he “has elected to remain in western Pennsylvania for the duration of camp in order to train with the Pittsburgh Penguins.”
Despres has, obviously, stated that his goal is to make the Pens roster this season.
"In the short term, I want to try to have as much fun as I can with (Team Canada) camp and then camp with the Penguins," he said from NHL.com from Team Canada world junior summer evaluation camp last week. "Then, my goal is to start the season (in Pittsburgh) and stay there. But if it doesn't happen, it doesn't matter. I'll continue to work to try to get better and hopefully one day I will."
Selected first overall in the 2007 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Entry Draft, Despres scored nine goals and 38 assists in 63 regular season games and another two goals and 17 assists in 21 post-season tilts.
If the Laval, Quebec native does not make the Penguins, he will be issued back to Saint John as he is only 19.
Finally, forwards Zach Phillips and Jonathan Huberdeau and defenceman Nathan Beaulieu will miss the first few days of camp because of the NHL’s Research, Development, and Orientation Camp. The camp runs from August 17th to 19th at the Toronto Maple Leafs practice facility in Etobicoke, Ontario.
Jurco was invited to attend as well.
Training camp opens on Wednesday, August 18 at 10:00 am at Harbour Station. The Sea Dogs’ first pre-season game is August 21 in the Port City when they face the revamped Halifax Mooseheads.
